GAVAN REILLY HAS been named as the new political correspondent at TV3.
Reilly, formerly of TheJournal.ie, will now be responsible for the station’s daily political and current affairs coverage on the recently rebranded 3News.
He leaves Today FM, where he had served as the political correspondent and regular stand-in for Matt Cooper on The Last Word and Neil Delamere on The Sunday Best.
He had also recently been appointed political correspondent at Newstalk.
The move from Marconi House to Ballymount comes after the resignation of long-standing political editor Ursula Halligan last month.
Viewers of TV3 will be familiar with Reilly from his stints on Tonight with Vincent Browne and Ireland AM.
Mick McCaffrey, head of 3News, said the station was “delighted” to hire Reilly.
Everyone at TheJournal.ie wishes their former teammate all the best in his new role – and for his impending nuptials later this month.

Brilliant news. Gavan was outstanding as part of the staff on The Journal and has been a valued and balanced journalist/contributor overall.

I’m delighted for Gavin Reilly, I think he’s a fine journalist. As an older person I think we have some very good young journalists coming on stream. Something we badly need
@Jane Waters: hadn’t given that much thought, but you’re right. I never rated the older set-piece lot very highly, nor the crew that cut their teeth during the tiger, all shallow and reactive. I wonder will the cream rise to the top with the latest batch, time will tell.

@Government Sachs: It takes a certain shallowness to follow politics for a living. You must be easily entertained, and have a short attention span. Most of us grow out of it by 23 or 24. Keeping track of the latest politicians much like a soccer fan watches transfer windows, and then asking stupid repetitive questions, much like sports journalists do. And then, getting the same answers to the same questions, but doing it anyway. It’s no life.

I quite like Gavin Reilly, I was wondering when he was going to move up in the world. He’ll inevitably replace Matt Cooper.
Having said that, it must be awful being a man who will perpetually look like a ten year old at a wedding.
