Pictures: Republican fires burn to mark the anniversary of internment without trial

This was the second night in a row that youths reportedly clashed with police in Belfast.

BONFIRES WERE LIT in the North last night as republicans began to mark the anniversary of the introduction of internment during the Troubles, leading to a second night of clashes between young people and police.

On Monday night, police in Belfast were attacked and cars were torched by youths after the removal of wood from a nationalist bonfire site.

Police Service of Northern Ireland (PSNI) Superintendent Andrea McMullan said officers were dealing with “localised disorder in the Friendly Street area of the Markets”, which she said was caused by a small group of youths.

She said that children as young as 12 were attacking police and parked cars in the area. “Police will not tolerate such wanton violence,” she said yesterday.

Despite this, however, further fires were lit last night as youths clashed with police again.

Sinn Féin has condemned the behaviour of those attacking police. Local councillor Deirdre Hargey described the disorder as “unacceptable”.

She said: “There is no defending this behaviour at all and it needs to stop now.”

The party’s north Belfast councillor, JJ Magee, told BBC News he understood that two cars were set alight in the New Lodge area and one petrol bomb was thrown at police last night.

Images shared online showed a car set alight on Belfast’s North Queen Street yesterday evening.

Internment was a policy introduced by the Northern Irish government in 1971 which saw Irish republicans arrested and imprisoned without trial. No loyalists were arrested during this time, despite the violent acts from both sides.

It’s like the traditional pompous and disrespectful British political mindset to Ireland. ‘Behave yourself and we’ll take you into account.’ Completely ignorant of the political and socio-economic history of the region. No wonder there are more Catholic Unionists than Protestant Nationalists with this kind of welcome at a possible United Ireland.

If you have no issue with repeated sweeping generalisations being spouted about people in the six counties, perhaps then you ought not complain about repeated sweeping generalisations about people in the 26 counties. Hmmm… Jews in the region for thousands of years… Islam shows up and then they’re a lot less Jew’s in the region… wonder what happened to them all ? Oh I know, they left their homeland voluntarily because the Arab invaders asked them nicely… kinda like the Irish left their land when the British so politely asked for a few acres here and there… The Jew’s were then really happy to head off on a multi- generational holiday to Europe and beyond… no forced conversions, pogroms or expulsions needed…no politically engineered solutions to remove them from their homeland at all.. Of course as all this happened hundreds of years ago they should just accept it… just like the Irish did in The North..

@Diarmuid: Sinn Fein and their supporters are at the fore front, in conjunction with other community groups in organising events such as ‘ Feile an Phobail’ and ‘ Gasyard Feile’ as alternatives to these bonfires. Lots of communities have spent a lot of time and effort in organising similar local events as well.
Maybe your lack of knowledge of these are not entirely your own ignorance, and the lack of media coverage of these very well run and supported contributes to that.

@Diarmuid: If I’d to hazard a guess I’d say that while not orchestrated the “disturbances” were certainly foreseen and the bonfires allowed to go ahead.. It would definitely strengthen the SF argument for a complete ban of all illegal bonfires as well as allowing them to say that they would also be giving something up themselves…

Whats good for the goose is good for the gander, If unionists can have ridiculous dangerous fires to commemorate their days why cant nationalists do the same? I personally think all of them should be outlawed, when you cant burn the wrong kind of coal legally in London why under the present administration should Belfast be any different?

Jesus what’s the story with all the bonfires in Northern Ireland, are they cold?
Catholics give out about bonfires, Protestants give out about bonfires, but they love them.
There’s a solution to it, a bloody bonfire competition. MORONS BOTH.

Jaysis some of the prejudiced, ill-informed, sanctimonious crap being spouted by some of the free state posters on this page is astounding.

What’s really soul destroying is the general feeling toward the occupied six counties that people in the south promote. Any expression of national pride in the past or drawing attention to the apparthied enforced during the unification wars in the north is seen as causing trouble as people show no solidarity with fellow Irish people and the discrimination suffered by them on a daily bases still by a minority settler community propped up by a foreign power .That’s the reality of the situation it’s disgusting to think how many people would wash they’re hands of a huge part of the country and it’s people
