Hate Valentine's Day? Find refuge at one of these events...

If you’re happily single or don’t believe in celebrating Valentine’s Day, we have put together a list of alternative things for you to do tomorrow night.

HATE VALENTINE’S DAY? Maybe you’re happily single and not in the market for a partner, or you’re ensconced in a relationship where you lavish praise on your other half on more than just one day of the year.

Or maybe you think that Valentine’s Day is a load of sentimental muck cooked up to sell cards and chocolates…

Whatever the reason, there are plenty of alternative ways to spend tomorrow night that don’t involved packed restaurants or over-priced flowers.

  • Go people hunting

If you think love sucks, then head to the Project Arts Centre in 39 East Essex Street, Temple Bar, Dublin 2 Temple Bar tomorrow from 5.30pm to 8pm to forget romance and have fun with Love Sucks, two interactive games from Make and Do. This involves two games: Love at First Sight, where players try to seduce as many partners as they can (don’t worry – it’s a game, you won’t need to really seduce anyone); and Peoplehunt, which is a smartphone icebreaker game (bring your iphone for this one) by Crowdscanner. Find out more here.

  • Watch an Emile Zola film

What says ‘I don’t celebrate Valentine’s Day’ better than watching an adaptation of an Émile Zola film about a priest who is in love with his friend’s wife and turns into a vampire after a failed medical experiment? Thirst, written, produced and directed by Park Chan-wook, can be watched in Seomra Spraoi tomorrow from 8pm – 10pm. For some post-Valentine’s Day highjinks, head to Seomra Spraoi on Thursday, February 16, 7pm – 10pm where the Vegan Workers Coop Cafe will host a Love Sick Cafe and Vegan Clothes Swap Disco from 6.30pm – 9pm.

  • Eat something unusual

If a standard restaurant is not your thing, bring your loved one – or just yourself – to Edible at the Science Gallery.  The special Valentine’s Day event is not your usual lovefest, as it focuses on genetics and beauty and sexual selection. By the latter, they don’t mean picking out a person in a club. You’ll even get to tuck into a tasty buffet, which will definitely get you in the Edible mood.

  • Watch Liam Neeson battle some wolves

If Valentine’s Day makes you want to hole yourself up in a darkened room, why not make that room a cinema and head to your local to watch Ireland’s own Liam Neeson battle some wolves in The Grey. This film is as anti-romantic as they come: a plane packed with oil-drillers crashes in a remote part of Alaska… in the middle of territory ‘owned’ by wolves. Fighting between man and wolf ensues.

  • Watch a match

You’re guaranteed to find very few couples watching a match when they could be at a restaurant making googly-eyes at each other. And we’d venture there won’t be much romance when the night’s Champions League games get underway. Find your local guys and gals watching the match and feel the passion of the moment when Lyon play APOEL and Leverkusen come up against Barcelona – both games kick off at 7.45pm.

About time some country gave him citizenship. They’ll make movies about him in years to come. Information is power and without it we are all mushrooms.

Vladimir Putin is a good guy, a man of peace, stop trying to demonize him, we don’t buy it.

Julian Assange is the greatest investigative journalist of the 21st century. The work he and wikileaks do is no different to newsrooms around the globe, except wikileaks has a 100% track record when it comes to accuracy, this cannot be said of most modern mainstream media outlets.

Yeah, sometimes too accurate – publishing the names of anti-Taliban informants for the world to see probably wasn’t the smartest thing in the world, and the mainstream media certainly wouldn’t cock something up that horrifically.

Unfortunately, there are too many ill-educated rednecks in America to know when they’re being had by a Russian state actor.

Sorry to tell you, that’s not the case. Assange publicly defended publishing the documents – unredacted – even though the Taliban subsequently announced they’d made a list of the people disclosed as informers within the intelligence leaks.

    http://www.nytimes.com/2010/10/24/world/24assange.html?pagewanted=all

“Mr. Assange defended posting unredacted documents, saying he balanced his decision “with the knowledge of the tremendous good and prevention of harm that is caused” by putting the information into the public domain.”

The man is an agent of Russia. His reaction to real investigative journalism (the Panama Papers) is such a transparent display of his agenda. He’s no hero of free speech, only of the speech that presses the mythology that he’s been persecuted for being a Russian enterprise manifestating itself as some crusade for transparency. His tweets about the Panama Papers being manufactured to tarnish the Russians aren’t particularly flattering for both himself and his organisation.

    @Old Gordon:
It’s scary the number of people that think he’s an innocent hero who’s only mission is to expose the truth. He’s certainly done that and fair play to him for that, but he has also been extremely selective about what he realeases and who it damages, and has also manipulated material by heavy editing to put a biased slant on it (eg. ‘collateral murder’ video). He has a clear agenda, but many are blind to it.

@Old Gordon: Yeah, usual crap on here, if all else fails blame the Russians, even you do not speak one word of Russian and therefore have no clue whatsoever about Russia. Typical comment from an uneducated or misguided person. Do me a favour, learn the Russian language, read some Russian news, make some Russian friends. Educate yourself, before you cast the wide shadow of cloudy judgement. Russia is not perfect, at all, but your comment is beyond ridiculous. This man stands on his own legs, and fair play to him. He will be remembered.

@Old Gordon: Bullshit. Julian Assange is a rare human being, a person of substance, morals and principals, Russia is not the enemy of the World, but the US is doing it’s best to demonize Putin, a very peaceful man, who is extremely popular in Russia, and across the world, and if social comments are anything to go by, Putin seems to be quite popular with a lot of Americans. Thanks to julian and Wikileaks, the people are being informed.

@gregory: His whole function is to embarrass Western governments. The reaction to the journalists that leaked the Panama Papers was illuminating at best.

The only people the Russian government should fear, are the Russian people themselves.

A couple of years ago Assange said he was in possession of leaked information that was damaging to the Kremlin and said its public release on Wikileaks was imminent, yet it still hasn’t happened. Why not? If he was a man of principle without fear, favour or bias surely all obtained information would be treated equally, however this is clearly not the case.

@Tom&Gerry: “Putin, a very peaceful man”

Peaceful how? By invading and annexing his neighbours because he feels like it? By supporting mass murderers abroad with the Russian military? The US do their fair share of international skulduggery no doubt, but saying Putin is ‘peaceful’ is just a distortion of the historical record.
