String of big business CEOs step down from Trump's advisory council in wake of Charlottesville

The heads of Merck, Under Armour and Intel have all left the US President’s business advisory panel.

THE CHIEF EXECUTIVES of three major US firms have stepped down from Donald Trump’s business advisory panel, citing his failure to immediately condemn Saturday’s white nationalist rally in Charlottesville.

The heads of pharmaceutical company Merck (called MSD in Ireland), sportswear brand Under Armour and tech giant Intel have all opted to leave the advisory council, as sustained pressure comes on the US President in the wake of the weekend’s events.

A woman died and 20 people were injured when a car ploughed into a crowd of people after a rally by Ku Klux Klan (KKK) members and other white nationalists turned violent on Saturday.

Trump initially said that he denounced violence “on all sides”, but yesterday said that he directly condemned violence from white supremacists.

In a statement announcing his decision, Merck CEO Kenneth Frazier said: “Our country’s strength stems from its diversity and the contributions made by men and women of different faiths, races, sexual orientations and political beliefs.

As CEO of Merck and as a matter of personal conscience, I feel a responsibility to take a stand against intolerance and extremism.

Intel CEO Brian Krzanich said he joined the business council to try to advance the goals of the country’s manufacturing industry, but he believed that was no longer possible.

He said: “It is clear even to me that nearly every issue is now politicised to the point where significant progress is impossible.

I called on leaders to condemn the white supremacists and their ilk who marched and committed violence. I resigned because I want to make progress, while many in Washington seem more concerned with attacking anyone who disagrees with them.

Under Armour CEO Kevin Plank said that he loved the country and was “stepping down from the council to focus on inspiring and uniting through [the] power of sport”.

New York protests

Meanwhile, several hundred angry protesters demonstrated outside Trump Tower in New York yesterday, denouncing the President before his first visit to his Manhattan residence since taking office more than six months ago.

After making a brief stop at the White House, the commander-in-chief is spending several days in his Manhattan apartment before returning to his golf club in Bedminster, New Jersey to finish out his first summer holiday as president.

“Hey, hey. Ho, ho. Trump the racist has to go!” sang the crowd, some holding up giant balloon letters in gold that read: FU TRUMP.

“No Trump, no KKK, no Fascist USA,” the group chanted. “Love, not hate. That’s what makes America great.”

Dozens of officers stood guard for several blocks. Police detained at least one woman protesting outside the Prada store, as angry demonstrators rounded on those in uniform shouting: “Who do you serve?”

But Trump arrived in New York after dark, driving through the relatively empty streets of Manhattan under a heavy police presence.

No protesters could be seen from the motorcade along the way, as many were gathered on a different street from the chosen route.

“Feels good to be home after seven months, but the White House is very special, there is no place like it… and the US is really my home,” Trump said on Twitter.

@Techguy.ie: You would think and hope so, however how he was elected in the first place and how he is still in office? hes behavior would not have been tolerated from any president, this means the bar for ignorance and incompetence has been greatly increased. Behavior that was totally unacceptable a year ago is now seen as normal, this could have huge consequences in the future of politics and for his ousting.

Complete over reaction to his statement by the media and the public at large. If they played the whole speech that he made in full I think a lot of people would feel differently.

Funny thing it’s the so called “left, liberal and pro democracy” groups and media which have consistently worked against and attacked a democratically elected president.

The level of hatred is frightening. The fact that the mainstream media supports this is shocking.
Whatever about Trump the man he is the legitimately elected president within the system. What is being planned is no less then a coup d’etat (they don’t deny it as they wanted him impeached on his first day ) with the connivance of the Democratic Party, most of the media and their stormtroopers the antifas. Their hatred has blinded them to the long term consequences of their actions to both politics and society. They just don’t see the dangers. What’s torn apart cannot be easily put together again.

Condemning a Nazi/White Supremacist March should be easy, particularly when the march led to the death of a young woman. Why don’t Trump supporters get that? There are so few universally bad groupings you can say this about. If a few thousand paedophiles marched through O’Connell Street, with banners and symbols depicting their core belief, armed and looking for trouble, would it be so hard to condemn? Would it take three days and a public outcry to have a second attempt at condemnation? The first attempt blaming all sides, as if an anti-Nazi protest was somehow wrong? If that is now the case in the U.S. then that is some kick in the teeth to all those men and women who died fighting Nazism.

You got to love the potential irony of those who brought him to power, also being his ultimate downfall.

    @Tony Daly:
At the end of the day the only thing that focuses the mind of politicians are “bums on seats” . Only if they really believe that he will affect their chances of re-election next year will they move against Trump.
Most of the seats coming up next year are in die-hard republican areas so there is little chance of the GOP losing either house.
With economic figures good Trump could stumble along for the four years, a Trump campaign for re-election would be fascinating to watch.

We see at last the start of the end if Trump and what Trump represents. Hopefully Pence will be removed in the process because of his close connection to Trump.

Trump was the worst possible choice as President next to Pence.

Trump thinks that the awful costs of Pence as President will protect ztrump.as the incumbent but they are both the twins of evil and prejudice.

The constitution protects the president in the sense that he has similar powers of a medieval king. He can pardon anybody he likes including himself if the investigation by the special council tries to pin any criminal charges on him. The US needs to amend its constitution to dilute the power it bestows on the president of the country. Its absolutely irresponsible to give one person so much power. An army of apologists and distractors has to be employed by his office to cold warter almost everything he says in public on a daily bases. America is now the poster child of how not to govern a country , the system has been laid bare by the election of Trump . Democracy is a myth in America what you really have is a Corporateocracy running the show .
