Michal Kurek Garda Press Office

Gardaí say Polish man whose body was found in rural Dublin had been homeless

A post-mortem examination established that Michal died as a result of stab wounds.

GARDAÍ INVESTIGATING THE murder of Michal Kurek in county Dublin are renewing their appeal for information.

Michal was a 34-year-old Polish man whose body was found at Grange, Ballyboughal, on 4 August.

A post-mortem examination established that Michal died as a result of stab wounds.

Speaking today, Superintendent Noel Carolan said that the body had been found in a rural area.

“The area where Michal’s body was discovered is otherwise a generally very quiet, peaceful rural community. Michal was homeless during recent months and is known to have spent time in the Blanchardstown/Ongar area and in Dublin City Centre.”

Superintendent Carolan added that there were hundreds of lines of inquiry. He said that Michal had been homeless.

Garda resources are not being spared in this investigation and several hundred lines of enquiry are being examined. We have received massive assistance from the public as well as very valuable information from the local community, the Polish community and the homeless community. However, we are still appealing for anyone with information to come forward.

Gardaí are appealing to anyone who knew Michal, in particular anyone who met him or knew of his movements at any time on Thursday, 3 August or Friday, 4 August to contact with Balbriggan Garda Station on 01 802 0510 or the Garda Confidential Line 1800 666 111.

Rip to this poor man. Just a thought…I’m not racist and welcome all of our Polish friends and our friends from all across the world. But surely any non irish should be given the opportunity of a free flight to their homeland if they fall upon homelessness. Not mandatory deportation or anything just give these people who probably can’t afford a flight the opportunity to return to family. Considering how much higher homelessness would be in Ireland with families taking in their own

@Len Brennan: It’s a sign of the times that you have to preface a perfectly reasonable and ethical idea with “I’m not racist” Everyone walking on eggshells. Thanks political correctness.

@Len Brennan: not that easy, being homeless in Ireland is still easier than being homeless in Poland, i would say they get much more support here. Also i think for most of them it is to hard to admit that they failed in front of their families, friends, etc.

@The W: I would fully expect many to not take up the offer but for those who do it cluld be a huge help to them in getting their life back on track. Furthermore it may ease our homelessness crisis slightly in the cities although that would not necessarily be the objective. I would wager many foreign nationals who have fallen into homelessness will have become deeply disillusioned with the hopes and dreams they had when they arrived on our shores

@Len Brennan: I spoke to a Irish homeless man one day he left the family farm to work in Dublin his father said to him you Will fail and most of his family begrudge him leaving, this is how he ended up homeless when things went wrong no job no income. Same probably with a lot of the foreign homeless here.

@Len Brennan: I can remember an Irish in Britain charity doing this for Irish homeless in London when I was a kid. They’d literally put on a few buses, to enable people to come home for Christmas. They had the return tickets, so there was no expectation that they were gone for good, but quite a number stayed home and didn’t get the return bus back – at least for a while, although I’d say quite a number, once they’d had a bit of a break, went back to try their luck again.

But there were many many who wouldn’t get on the bus, because they’d told their families they were doing well, and didn’t want to admit to failure. Or because there was nobody they wanted to go home to.

There are lots of our own homeless, who probably have family they could go back to, down the country, or cross town or whereever. But won’t. Often for reasons connected with why they’d left in the first place.

@Len Brennan: All EU migrants to Ireland should be made aware of the crisis in the housing and rental markets, at the Airports, but preferably before they decide to come. Those coming from outside the EU, should not be let in until we are in a position to house them, or provide suitable accomadation. This nonsense of direct provision is a mess, and unworkable it is causing more problems than solutions

Very sad , cant imagine how his family must be feeling. The nightmare alone of trying to return his body home to be buried hopefully the Irish Government will be of assistance here.

There is some melancholy and decency in his face, strikes me as a good guy who wouldn’t harm anybody. Who would’ve done something so brutal and senseless to him. Probably some drug or money debt… RIP….
