Appeal for witnesses after woman 'kicked in face' by man 'with American accent'

The incident happened in the Henry Street area of Limerick in the early hours of last Monday morning.

GARDAÍ HAVE APPEALED for witnesses to an attack on a woman in Limerick city to come forward.

The young woman was “kicked into the face” by a man with an American accent in the early hours of Monday, 21 August.

Appealing for witnesses, a garda spokeswoman said: “The assault happened between 3.30am and 4am in the Upper Henry Street area. A young female was kicked into the face receiving injuries to her nose and lip.”

“This assault was conducted by a male with an American accent,” they added.

Gardaí at Henry Street are looking for any witnesses and can be contacted on 061 212400.

Limerick Metropolitan Mayor, Sean Lynch, appealed for “anyone with information to come forward and help gardaí”.

“I don’t want these things happening on my watch. I wish the woman a speedy recovery, I’m thinking of her,” he said.

Lynch, a retired Limerick detective who was part of the force that fought serious crime gangs in the city in the 1990s and mid-2000s, added: “Thankfully this is not something we come across on a regular basis.”

“It’s rare and we don’t want it in our city.”

Limerick is a great place; it’s a safe city and is in a very good place at the moment. That’s the way I want it to stay.

@Fank Pulman: I grew up in Limerick and also lived in Dublin working for a while, so I have experience of both sides. The stab city moniker was bestowed by Dublin based media years ago. In the 2.5 years I lived in Dublin I woke up to more stabbing or shooting news each morning than I ever heard in my previous 20 years in Limerick. But I noticed something odd, see when there is a stabbing or shooting in Dublin it gets reported as happening in Swords, Tallaght, etc instead of as Dublin. Articles like the one you shared from the past week happened in Kilmallock, which isn’t in Limerick city and is further from the city centre than Swords or Tallaght are from Dublin City centre.

Also, last year I recall Dublin getting extra special gardai assigned due to the gang warfare. I also recall reading statistics a few years ago which showed Dublin was the crime capital of Europe. How many of the media outlets that ran articles about stab city ran articles about Crime Capital? Hello, look at the articles about stabbings and shootings in Dublin the past month, compare them against the number reported for Limerick. You will see for yourself.

Hope the lady is ok and the guy is caught..
But have to wonder why this assault over the 100′s of assaults elsewhere in the country is getting publicity.
Is every assault in the country going to get an article in the Journal now?

@Niallers: nope, just more Dublin based media looking for their favourite deflection from all the articles they have been publishing recently about crime in Dublin

@Jeffrey McMahon: Here we go again, so the media aren’t allowed to print any negative news about Limerick? Ye lads need to relax, the media aren’t out to get you so drop the paranoia. The same crap was on the last article a few days ago. News will be printed regardless of what you say so maybe just get used to it. I didn’t see anyone complain about the Donegal knife incident or the Kilkenny shooting in the last week or so.

@Jeffrey McMahon: That’s right, bury your head in the sand. Our regional towns and cities have become ‘no-go’ areas. Drink, drugs and violence in every regional town every weekend. It’s terrifying.

@Niallers: It’s getting publicity because the “man” hasn’t been caught yet and they’re hoping for witnesses.

@Niallers: why is this assault getting highlighted? Because all us Irish are like brothers and sisters… we can beat the crap out of each other but if anyone else tries?? Oh no.. no no…

@Rosie Murray: they are trying to highlight that this is another case of male violence against females and that females should be scared of their lives of males.

There is absolutely no context provided in this story. It’s hard for me to imagine a man just kicked another person in the face for no reason whatsoever.

I’m with Seth. Was this attacked a karate master who high kicked some woman in the face? Not to justify any violence, but it does sound peculiar.

WOW the description of a man with an American accent will really narrow the suspect pool down! How about approx age build hair or skin colour? I know a guy with an American accent should I call the guards about this suspect?
