The 5 at 5 5 minutes, 5 stories, 5 o’clock…

EVERY WEEKDAY EVENING, TheJournal.ie brings you five things you need to know before you head out the door…

1. #WELFARE: The Department of Social Protection says it has saved more than €645million in potential future benefit payments, following a crackdown on welfare fraud and a review of almost a million claims.

2. #COPYRIGHT: Social media sites and internet providers cannot be forced to monitor their users’ uploads for copyright material, the European Court of Justice has ruled. The landmark judgement is expected to have a significant impact on the debate over anti-piracy legislation.

3. #ÁRAS11: RTÉ has rejected claims that Pat Kenny read out a “bogus tweet” on the pivotal Frontline debate during the presidential election campaign. The moment was widely seen as a ‘game changer’ for Seán Gallagher’s election bid.

4. #INVESTIGATION: A Dublin councillor has been found in breach of ethical guidelines by failing to disclose property he owned in the city. However, a watchdog said the contravention was “inadvertent”.

5. #CURRY FAVOUR: If you’re a fan of Indian food, there’s good news today: an ingredient in the spice turmeric can help cut the risk of Alzheimer’s in later life. Go on, have some naan with that.
