• Gardaí investigating the fatal shooting of Melanie McCarthy-McNamara, 16, in Tallaght last week have arrested two men in Athy, Co Kildare.
• Meanwhile, gardaí near Celbridge, Co Kildare discovered three IEDs and a handgun during an investigation into the activities of dissident republicans. The Defence Forces described the devices as ‘viable’ and the army bomb squad made them safe at the scene.
• The Department of Social Protection says that over €654 million has been saved after a review of welfare payments coupled with a crackdown on fraudulent claims. The department also says that 437 people had their jobseekers’ payments cut for failing to engage with the National Employment Action Plan or for refusing training from FÁS or from the department.
• The UN General Assembly is set to vote this evening on a non-binding resolution regarding the Syrian regime’s crackdown on pro-reform uprisings. In today’s poll we asked if you thought the UN should take greater action on Syria.
• Sonia O’Sullivan will be the first person to bring the Olympic torch through Dublin ahead of the London 2012 Games this summer.

• The European Court of Justice today ruled that web hosting companies and services cannot be ordered to install filtering software to monitor uploaded content for copyright infringement.
