'It could have tragic consequences': Teenagers have been spotted 'train surfing' on the Dart

Two teenagers were photographed standing between two carriages on a moving Dart at the Killester station.

PICTURES OF TWO teenage boys ‘train surfing’ – standing in between two Dart carriages as the train was on the move – are being handed to gardaí by Irish Rail.

The pictures, taken at Killester station, show the two teenage boys standing on the links which connect the Dart’s carriages together.

These images, taken by a freelance journalist, emerged after a number of videos in recent weeks of youths ‘scutting’ – clinging to the back of a vehicle to hitch a ride – on a number of the new Dublin Bus ‘SG’ model buses. Drivers have said this is a frequent issue, particularly in Tallaght and Finglas.

Irish Rail told TheJournal.ie that it is investigating the incident and that images of the individuals in questions have been passed to gardaí for investigation.

“It’s a very dangerous practice and we would appeal to young people and their parents to desist from this kind of behaviour,” the spokesperson said.

It could end in very tragic consequences.

“These instances are extremely rare but extremely serious.”

Irish Rail has said its drivers are “trained to be vigilant to such behaviour” and that a number of roaming teams of security who work on the Dart lines.

While Irish Rail said these incidents are a rare occurrence for the transport company, one Dublin Bus driver told TheJournal.ie that ‘scutting’ is becoming a regular occurrence on buses.

“It’s getting to be regular, at the moment there is a massive anti-social behaviour in the last month. They’re climbing on the back of the buses and if they fall they could be killed, but it’s not just that there is a lot of stone-throwing etc as well.”

Dublin Bus told TheJournal.ie it is “aware of these types of incidents and has reported such to An Garda Síochána”.

“These are extremely dangerous actions which could result in serious injury and Dublin Bus strongly discourages anyone from partaking in such reckless behaviour,” it said.

We should be encouraging this behaviour. Ultimately it’ll only make for safer city streets. If anything, we need to add more carriages.

@Kevin O’Neill: I’d say though there’s a direct link between the recent increase in this happening here and that it has become a fast-growing online trend in the last couple months specifically on YouTube & Facebook of kids / teens / young adults filming themselves train / bus surfing.

More worryingly the people who make these types of videos pretty much always also seem to make videos of them breaking-into & climbing to the top of buildings and cranes which is a considerably more dangerous activity.

@MyBrokenKnees: problem is these scrotes only hurt themselves and delay/cancel transport services because of their stupidity

Worst of all THEY also blame the government. It’s usually someone else’s fault for not providing them with facilities, poor scrotes…. they’ve nothing to do all day

Again we are witnessing behaviour that has little or no deterrent. If there were severe penalties for such behaviour we would see less of same. Hit these people where it hurts

Time and time again these things occur and I ask “why have we no Transport Police like the rest of the EU “? It’s time Ireland moved out of the dark ages with its Policing model of one type fits all !

I’d reserve judgement on the Darwin awards. Putting ones self on an incredibly dangerous situation may indeed be stupid. To survive it demonstrates a certain competence not to mention skill. That said, I would council against it.

Pull them from the carriage and batter them to within an inch of their lives. Sure wouldnt be as bad as being crushed by a railcar wheel, is an example to others and will teach them to cop on – once they can eat without a straw again.

@Shane Corry: Well put Shane, I think you’ve hit the nail on the head there. It seems to be a bit of a challenge were you have to go further than the last person eg bus/train surfing, climbing large structures/buildIngs. YouTube is full of these type of videos which get large viewing numbers.
