THERE HAVE BEEN fresh calls this week for the amount of PE taught in schools to be increased.
Currently, Ireland ranks far behind most of its European counterparts for ensuring pupils at both primary and secondary level get enough exercise during school hours.
Fine Gael Senator Catherine Noone believes there should be mandatory daily PE classes to fight obesity, thus “building healthy bodies” and “preventing chronic disease”.
The World Health Organisation recommends children and teenagers should get an hour of moderate to vigorous exercise every day. In Ireland, this is met by just 12% of 12 to 18 year olds, according to Noone.
Her fix is to bring in mandatory PE classes in school. Do you agree?
