Trailer Watch: Which movie should you go see this weekend?

What’s a must-watch, and what’s a miss? We tell you.

PLANNING ON HEADING to the cinema this weekend?

There are a few new movies out, but which is a must-watch, and are there any you should avoid?

We take a look.

Maze

LionsgateFilmsUK / YouTube

What we know

Based on the true story of the Maze prison escape in 1983, when 38 IRA prisoners escaped from the notorious jail.

What the critics say

  • “…you will be riveted to your seat in what is a refreshingly authentic film, which has not one false note.” – RTÉ
  • “With concentration and pure conviction, [Tom Vaughn-Lawlor] portrays the almost-monastic single-mindedness of an IRA man who is utterly devoted to his cause.” – Screen Daily

Kingsman: The Golden Circle

20th Century Fox / YouTube

What we know

A spy spoof from Matthew Vaughn and Jane Goldman, and the follow-up to Kingsman: The Secret Service (based on the Kingsman comics). Features a host of stars, from Colin Firth to Halle Berry.

What the critics say

  • “For the most part, The Golden Circle is a solid second installment in the Kingsman franchise. It takes certain big risks, but makes sure to double down on the elements that worked particularly well in The Secret Service, such as including clever nods to classic spy movies – especially Bond – and frenetic action set pieces.” – Screen Rant
  • “Indeed, The Golden Circle is a film high on the fumes of its own toxic brand, a backward-looking boys’ fantasy in thrall to the establishment that has absolutely nothing to say about the roles class, consumerism, nationalism and sex play within our society. It’s a glib and puerile throwback in more ways than its makers intended.” – Little White Lies

Borg McEnroe

KinoCheck International / YouTube

What we know

Shia LaBoeuf plays John McEnroe and Stellan Skarsgard plays Bjorn Borg’s coach in this retelling of their legendary 1980 Wimbledon game. Expect some intense scenes and a fair bit of shouting.

What the critics say

  • “The leads pretend to play tennis well, and LaBeouf does a nice, salty impersonation. But there’s not much more to it than that.” - Little White Lies
  • “A sports film with an arthouse sensibility. It benefits greatly from its chosen subject matter — two of the most remarkable characters in sporting history — but only manages to truly get under the skin of one of them.” – Empire

Always wanted to visit all the islands off the coast of Ireland. However like a lot of schoolkids, I only managed Cape Clear, sceilig mhichil, Aran and a handful of others.
