THERE ARE DELAYS on all northbound and southbound Dart services after a loaded truck hit a rail bridge at Grand Canal Dock.

Irish Rail confirmed that services were delayed by up to 20 minutes following the incident, which occurred on Barrow Street close to the entrance to Grand Canal Dock station.

Images show a loaded truck stopped at a bridge right next to the station.

From the rear it appears that the truck was too high for it to pass under the bridge.

Irish Rail confirmed that services were delayed for up to 20 minutes due to the incident.

“There is up to 20 mins of delays to North and Southbound DART due to a truck hitting a bridge at Grand Canal Dock,” the rail service said.

Are there fines or points for this? Surely it is reckless driving

@Kal Ipers: Why isn’t there a height restriction barrier before these bridges? Its CIE who are reckless

@winston smith: was implemented in Fairview but still didn’t work. Drivers should know the height of their load, it’s not light the height of the bridge isn’t clearly marked

What about a sensor at the entrance to the street that detects the high load, which in turn flashes a bunch of red lights at the bridge itself? This sort of thing can’t be difficult to implement.

Although you can’t really cater for or total stupidity, you can do your best to reduce the chances of a hit.

@Conor O’Farrell: I reckon a large solid bridge should be enough of a deterrent. We already have plenty of other traffic lights people ignore. As a wise man once said “stupid is as stupid does’.

Jay how could it not work…simple logic if the vehicle doesn’t hit a fixed height before the bridge which let’s say is an inch lower than the bridge how can it not pass under??? unless of course they hit the actual pillars of the bridge but that would be less frequent event I’d imagine.

@Conor O’Farrell: truck driver got stuck in limerick tunnell recently, despite sensors detecting his height and dropping barriers, he just drove through the barrier, cant allow for stupidity.

No driver did that deliberately, his day is not about to get any better, in this day and age why can they not bounce signals off oncoming traffic to check height and signal a flashing board message like the speeding signs. they must be spending millions repairing bridges, spend a bit on preventative measures.

Did you notice that the bridge was not wearing a cycling helmet? A cycling helmet would have saved the bridge.

There is a rumour that an oncoming car was flashing its lights to warn the truck driver that he could not make it but the truck driver wanted to get through and take priority. He mistakenly thought that the motorist was trying to take priority.

No structural damage was done to the bridge and it was only a temporary interrruption.
The traffics ramp entering under that bridge is quite high and severe. That can’t help.
