Three Irish doctors and a businessman are rowing across the Atlantic for charity

Three experienced rowers and one novice are taking their boat Saoirse across the Atlantic in a charity row.

Relentless Rowers 1 Relentless Rowers Relentless Rowers

WE ALL BECOME a bit disillusioned with our situation at some point in our lives – get sick of the same routine, feel stuck in a rut, and go on a hunt for adventure.

But very few of us would react to that feeling the way Thomas Browne would – to pick up two oars and join a team of experienced rowers on a trip across the Atlantic.

Ahead of their plan to set sail on 12 December, Thomas told TheJournal.ie that this was something he really felt he had to do.

“I was caught in this rut where I was seeing the same people on the same bus, doing the same thing everyday. I love what I do but I did miss being scared, if that makes sense. I needed to do something that I’ve never done before.”

He got it into his head that he wanted to row across the Atlantic, and a mutual friend put him in touch with three doctors from Cork, who were already planning to undertake the journey.

Relentless Rowers 3 Relentless Rowers Relentless Rowers

Junior doctors Seán Underwood and Patrick O’Connor, podiatrist Eoin O’Farrell aim to raise at least €20,000 for Cork University Hospital’s children’s unit. But they had some experience at it, while Thomas had none.

“I literally came in from scratch, I knew absolutely nothing about rowing.”

The 5,500km journey in the 28-ft ocean rowing boat will involve no outside assistance, and they’re aiming to finish the journey in 35 days to beat the world record (but it will probably take 60 days).

He says he came into it fairly “Bambi-eyed” and had some catching up to do.

“I kind of thought rowing was just putting the oar in the water but there’s a lot of technique to it.”

During during the week he does weights, goes for a swim, and does cardio training in the evening, but he says the mental aspect will be the toughest part.

We did a 24-hour practice row at the weekend where we went to Kinsale and back. You realise it by doing these 24/48-hour rows, the lack of sleep and doing the same thing over and over again, you start hallucinating.
There are two hulls you can lie down to sleep in. When the sea is rough you strap strap yourself in, and claustrophobia starts setting in. You can’t see anything for miles and miles and miles.

Relentless Rowers 2 Relentless Rowers Relentless Rowers

When you’re 27 years old and fit and active, you feel invincible, but during these rows it really hits home that humans aren’t made to be on the water, and shows how vulnerable we are.

He said that being out at sea by yourself and feeling a bit lost seemed like a good metaphor for depression, which he had suffered before. That’s why Thomas wants to raise awareness of Pieta House through his journey.

Sean Underwood acknowledged the momentous task that they were about to embark upon:

“Fewer people have crossed the Atlantic than have climbed Everest, so we’re well aware of the challenge we’re undertaking, but quite simply, we believe that you only get one shot at life, everybody dies but not everybody lives.

In the hospitals we work in, we are faced almost daily with the fragility of the human condition.

“If we can make a difference to just one child in the CUH Children’s Unit by competing in this race, then it will all have been worth it.”

The “Relentless Rowers” as they’re called, are urging businesses to support their journey with a sponsor package. Enquiries can be made to sclunderwood@gmail.com.  You can also follow their journey at www.relentless.ie or on their social media.

@John Kelly: yes. I used to live in something similar but 1/4 the size 20 odd years ago. It was for low income single people and it worked well for 10-15 people but could get messy if any more with regards cleaning and kitchens. The scheme was set up to take a percentage of your wages so you still had money at the end to save etc. In this case, they have 4 times as many people using the facility’s and charging massively for the privilege…..

    @John Kelly: Hi John

Yes, it worked for me at the time and I stayed there for approx. 5 years
Everyone in the house/houses had a responsibility to each other and getting things done and rent was at a agreed level that was sustainable and fair.
This was for people who worked in the city (London) on low-ish wages.

This scheme is different where the main point is to get as many people as possible into the tightest area while sharing Utility’s

I know for a fact, that 10 people (15ish when partners around) in a commune needs a lot of work
Issues with noise, cleaning, kitchen usage during peak time ..etc needs a lot of work. Having too many people would turn some people into recluses in their own room as folks tend to commandeer areas. Could you imagine a new tenant moving in and trying to navigate times to use the kitchen, using common area where the TV is and what programs to watch. I know its the nitty gritty sort of thing but those sort of things need to be looked at and when you are buying top dollar it needs to be done at the start and not when it’s a complete mess – -All you need is just 1 or 2 people going off on one and it would be a nightmare

Basically the more people- -the more work to make sure things don’t turn into a kip

@sue: I’d say the developers/landlords will charge just shy of what people are paying for an apartment with their own facilities. Due to the shortage in accommodation people will have no choice but to take them. So it will be a big step towards lowering the standard of living for many and increasing the bank balance of few.

The only “plan” FG have for housing is Mortgage to Rent. That’s the plan they have pushed as the solution since the debacle began. Ordinary people are no to own their own homes. Ownership is to remain in the hands of foreign investor corporations. Their profits exported tax free. That was the deal and incentive Noonan offered to the vultures at his secret breakfast meetings in Scotland.
FG never sought, and don’t have, any mandate to hand over the housing asset of the country to foreign private investor corporations.

This is what WT Cosgrave, Leo’s predecessor, wrote about the poor and less well off in the country. FG despise the poor, those on SW, those who live on minimum wage contracts, the 50% of those employed in the country who earn no more than 30,000 a year.
“They have no ideas whatsoever of civic responsibilities. As a rule their highest aim is to live at the expense of the ratepayers. Consequently, it would be a decided gain if they all took it into their heads to emigrate.”

My problem is not with co-living but with the prices that people will charge/have to pay, if you live somewhere with lots of people for 150-200/month then it would be ok. The Chinese come over stay 10-20 in a house, save their money and go home. Co-living as a temporary money saving measure should be an option but definitely not a solution to building 10-20 storey highrise apartments (with appropriate services and facilities)

Considering we have a housing crisis it’s insane the amount of opposition this is getting. It’s a type of development that will suit some people. Maybe just a small number of people but so what. It provides more overall housing to the market which is badly needed. If you don’t want to live in one then don’t. People act like it’s substandard because it’s small. It seems more akin to expensive student accommodation to me. It’s not a social housing development aimed at the less well off. It’s an option for young professionals.

@Toomasu Sumitsu: Do you seriously think for one minute that FG won’t push tenement dogbox housing as the solution for everyone they can cram into them. The homeless, families, living in the Hubs share kitchen and other “facilities”. The precedent is already set.

@Toomasu Sumitsu: it’s called normalisation. Once the standard has been lowered, it becomes acceptable, commonplace even. This is literally USSR level accommodation, at Dublin prices.
It also enables the maintenance and increase in cost of already expensive alternatives such as houseshares. The attitude is “it might suit someone”, never “it would suit me”. Anecdotally people who have lived in these kind of options would never wish to do so again. It’s a lazy option for politicians, and grist to the mill for venture capitalists. The housing crisis is the result of a failure to act on the part of those in power, nothing else.

@Dave Doyle: So you’re against something that might happen but not what’s actually happening. The precedent is set to have families living in hotels or homeless people dying on the street because of the cold but you’re worried they might have to share a kitchen. You need a long hard look at yourself.

@Toomasu Sumitsu: When there’s 6000 planning applications already in, it’s going to happen. Homeless families are already living in crowded “hubs” some charity run, some privately run, for profit. All families share facilities cooking, washing etc. There’s problems with bullying, kids having no free space. If anyone complains, they’re back on the streets. Homeless families living in grotty hotel rooms, or these hubs have no right to complain about any situation or they’re back on the streets.
Are you seriously trying to say that Leo won’t bung homeless families in these dogboxes if it will massage the homeless figures for him and his “government’.

Co-living ,what a joke. Why cant they build small one bedroom apartments at say 30/35 Sq. m ?
    Double bedroom,bathroom and living room/kitchen.
The proposed co living room is 177sq ft ,too big as just a bedroom but too small to actually have cooking facilities or be comfortable in.

Small apartments in the city centre, build 15 storey block with communal area and laundry room.Near PT links.
Lived in similar previously in Berlin and its ideal for a single person or couple.

These co living buildings arent falling between 2 stools and will be met with fierce opposition.

I don’t understand why there is any debate about this. Here are the facts; an “investment company” is creating a huge “co-living complex”

Each resident will be charged 1300eu a month to live in a bedroom smaller than a disabled parking spot

They will be sharing living and kitchen spaces with 40 OTHER PEOPLE!

    This is NOT affordable
    This is NOT reasonable
    This is NOT acceptable

This entire “proposal” was put forward by the developers and corporations who’ll manage them so that they can maximise their (tax free) profits, why build apartments when you can cram five times as many people into the same space for virtually the SAME rent.
This is way needs to be hilighted, these aren’t “cost effective” or “affordable” and any arguments to that effect (“students”, “single people”, “affordable”) are nonsense.

I’m certainly not a fan of the government but in all fairness this is a better solution than sleeping on the streets. There’s always someone to diss and complain about solutions (even temporary ones).
I certainly would snap up the opportunity to co live if I was in a homeless situation.

@Bealtaine Healy-Rae-Nua: luckily enough I don’t know any homeless people. But there are plenty out there that in my opinion would rather co-live than live on the streets. This figure of €1300 is hearsay. I don’t know a lot about HAP or rent allowances but they are options for people who can’t afford their rent.
I’m sure even co-living tenants don’t expect it rent free.

Go to any large city in Europe. People within reach of the city live in small apartments owned by landlords with a variety of living arrangements. It’s time people face that renting/owning large apartments or houses with gardens within a short distance of a major city is neither a right nor a given. This type of accommodation might suit some who could not otherwise afford to live in the area!

@Wreck Tangle: Yes, you’re right – they live in, as you said, “small apartments.” Those apartments all have a bedroom, a kitchen or kitchenette, a bathroom and a living room. Sometimes open plan, sometimes not. They’re *not* a single room, smaller than a disabled car parking space, with a kitchen to be shared with 40 other people.

Also – those small apartments? On the continent, they come with unlimited tenancies and rent controls. And they don’t cost €1,300 a month.

    @Bealtaine Healy-Rae-Nua:

Wrong. I live in Zurich, technically outside EU but within landmass of Europe and has more in common with “the continent” than Ireland. We could use your terminology and call it open plan but my first apartment was a bit bigger than a box room, I had 2 hobs in the corner that I didn’t use for fear I would burn the building down. I had a shared bathroom and washing machine. I paid 1400 EUR per month. It was what I could afford and was ok with living there.

These days I’m living the highlife with my girlfriend. I continue to live in a central location, we can afford a small one bed apartment, granted we have our own bathroom but we share the washing machine and dryer! We do not have the rent control or unlimited contract that you talk about. Why? Because rent controls do not work, they create a black market, landlords have no reason to invest in a building or if they do they change it to a different purpose i.e offices. NYC or Berlin are fine examples of this failure.

Munich studios are also common, will cost a lot more that 1300 EUR in the city and do not even come with a kitchen of any sort! I have a few friends living in converted containers in Zh city, they share their bathroom and kitchen and love it. As I said this kind of living will not be for everyone but will suit some!
