Houses evacuated as bomb squad makes explosive device safe in Limerick

A NUMBER OF houses and businesses were evacuated earlier this afternoon in Co Limerick after the discovery of an explosive device.

The alarm was raised before midday in Rathkeale, Co Limerick, with the Army Bomb Disposal Team arriving shortly thereafter on request from the gardaí.

A cordon was put in place around the affected site for the duration of the operation.

The object, described as an Improvised Explosive Device (IED) by a Defence Forces spokesperson, was made safe by the squad, before being removed to a secure location shortly after 2pm.

“Any items of an evidential nature will be handed over to An Garda Síochána to assist them with their investigations,” the spokesperson said.
