GARDAÍ HAVE SEIZED cocaine and cannabis with a combined estimated value in excess of €1 million during an operation in Co Offaly.
Gardaí also recovered a firearm along with ammunition.
The raid was carried out last night as part of ongoing investigations into organised criminal activity in the midlands. It was focused on a house, sheds and lands near Geashill.
During the search, gardaí recovered large quantities of cocaine and cannabis herb along with an amount of suspected amphetamine. A shotgun and large numbers of cartridges and rounds of ammunition were also recovered.
A man in his 30s was arrested at the scene and is currently detained under Section 2 of the Drug Trafficking Act, 1996 at Tullamore Garda Station. He can be held for up to 7 days.
The operation was led by the Laois/Offaly drugs unit assisted by local units based in Tullamore.
The investigation is ongoing.

@Noel James Doherty: I agree completely. I’d just rather the gardai & customs etc spent their time going after the importers, suppliers & dealers of hard drugs. The shotgun shows there’s plenty of revenue to protect. I wonder what could be funded here through a herb tax? Better to see it ploughed into the country than watch a drug boss pocketing the lot.
@Nollaig Elliot: You can also buy tobacco legally and diesel but you can also buy them illegally usually much cheaper. Or do you think that legalised narcotics wouldn’t carry a similar tax rate?
@Mick Jordan: Legally, and pharmacologically, speaking marijuana isn’t a narcotic. It is correctly classified as lovely.

@Honeybadger197: Would you describe Cannabis as a stimulant or a depressant? I would say depressant just as is alcohol or opioid’s. It makes you want to relax and in some cases sleep. Would you agree? And Narcotic is derived from Narcos the Greek for Sleep. So as an intoxicant making you relaxed and sleepy it can be described as a narcotic.

The reasons cannabis was initially made illegal by the uk was reputedly economic, to protect the cotton and linen industries as cannabis/ hemp has many uses which out-perform these traditional materials.
Later the USA took the charge with the prohibition movement of the 1920′s successfully seeking the outlawing of all mind altering substances. This was later rowed back for alcohol but kept in place for cannabis etc as it was used more by minorities than mainstream white culture at that time.
Successive American governments then used the banned status of various drugs for political reasons as ‘tough on drugs’ is a good vote getter.
Unfortunately prohibition and its associated crime has caused more harm than the drugs ever could have.

Well done, but unfortunately I’d imagine it will be the same sob story, disadvantaged background, currently undergoing a drug treatment programme, had a promising football career bulls€it. 6 months suspended.

Ah would ye not leave then with their drugs. They live in Offaly for gods sake, they need as much mind altering substances they can get in to themselves just to get outta the bed in the morning….
