Ferries cancelled amid fears over expected 'tidal surge' in Cork tomorrow evening

The county, still recovering from Ophelia, is preparing for Storm Brian.

Updated 9.14pm

A NUMBER OF ferries between Cork and France have been cancelled over the coming days amid fears over a predicted tidal surge in the county.

Brittany Ferries has cancelled sailings from Roscoff to Cork tomorrow and the return ferry on 21 October.

The company says it will contact all passengers scheduled to travel on either ferry “to offer assistance”.

“Passengers due to travel can also contact the Brittany Ferries call centre at 021 4277801,” a spokesperson said.

The company apologises to all passengers for the inconvenience this will cause to journeys.

The cancellations come ahead of a predicted tidal surge which is expected to coincide with high tides and occur at around 6pm off the Cork coast tomorrow.

Cork County Council has warned that the surge has the potential to cause flooding across low lying areas in Bantry, Clonakilty, Youghal and Midleton.

Sandbags will be available at council depots for these four areas from tomorrow morning.

Met Éireann earlier issued a Status Orange wind warning for seven counties including Cork, as Storm Brian is set to hit Ireland this weekend.

In light of the imminent wind warning, Cork County Council has asked members of the public to avoid coastal areas, and exercise extreme caution in relation to trees and structures that may have been affected by Storm Ophelia.

Road closures

In a statement, the local authority said: “We also request landowners to check trees on roadside boundaries which may have been affected by Storm Ophelia and could pose a risk.

Road users are urged to be aware overhanging tree limbs, surface water and remaining debris while drains and gullies continue to be cleared by council crews.

Two regional roads in Cork remain impassable. The R579 Midleton to Dungourney road is expected to open tomorrow. Over 20 trees fell on this stretch of road and two council crews are working to clear the area.

The R597 Glandore Harbour road is also impassable, but local diversions are in place. Council crews are continuing to clear the R602 Bandon road, which is passable but some delays are expected.

The council said the ESB has to deal with fallen cables on certain roads before they can be cleared, meaning they may not reopen for a few days.

Tankers and static tanks are available at a number of locations throughout the county for people who continue to be affected by water supply interruptions. More information can be read here.

People in bad situations with young kids and no families living nearby to take them in. Let’s hope it’s not a sign of the winter to come!

For those who imagine Cork will turn into Venice soon, every year 15 million square KM of sea ice develops and disappears so that area covers more than the United States and the EU combined or 178 times the land area of Ireland. Maybe some day a person might ask what causes the sea ice to appear and vanish as the biggest single weather event on the planet.

@Gerald Kelleher: The sea ice is not what we have to worry about. It’s already in the sea. It’s the ice on the likes of Antarctica and Greenland that’s the problem. It’s not in the sea. If it melts, it would be.

@Donncha Ó Coileáin: You don’t have to worry about anything when you are discussing the largest annual weather event which creates so large an area of sea ice. It is here all the worriers don’t want to go as it means not being at the front of the ‘climate change’ bus but just a normal discussion on why the ice is starting to appear presently and will start to vanish around April next year.

@Justin McNulty: The issue is what causes 15million square KM of Arctic sea ice to form and disappear in the space of 6 months – the largest weather event on the planet.

As for the other thing, get a pyrex bowl and put ice floating on top and mark the level where the ice meets the water. Now, if the ice melts then do you expect the water to rise above the mark ?.

As for lecture, no – I remind reasonable people that the until you can explain why sea ice forms every year exactly then they are wasting their time talking about sea level rises.

Let me clear things up because there are a lot of idiots out there promoting an experiment in order to show that sea ice doesn’t cause sea levels to drop when appearing or rise when melting. Arctic sea ice doesn’t fall from the clouds, it forms from the surrounding sea and then floats as a less dense material. The problem with the experiments is that they drop ice cubes into a graduated jug, watch them melt and viola !- determine no rise in level and then apply it to Arctic sea ice and sea levels. Surely somebody has enough sense that the larger volume of the less dense floating ice transforms into the a smaller volume of denser water as ultimately into the surrounding ocean from whence it came.

I refuse to believe Irish people could be this silly. The actual cause of Arctic sea ice notwithstanding, that ice is drawn from the surrounding sea as the sea is transformed into less dense ice where it floats. The only correct analogy is partly freezing a pyrex jug full of water and watch as the top layer forms ice thereby drop there has to be a drop in the level of unfrozen water to produce that ice. This is simple stuff and no lecture.

To be fooled by a stupid experiment and basically a sleight of hand based on volume/density of water and sea ice is unforgivable but if people want to believe Cork will be the Venice of Ireland then so be it, they can also follow the same people who can trick those who won’t think things through themselves.
