What the new hospital is set to look like.

The new children's hospital will be called... Phoenix Children's Health

The project is projected to cost over €1 billion in full and is due to be completed in 2021.

THE GOVERNMENT HAS announced the name of the new national children’s hospital being built in Dublin.

Once it’s opened the hospital will be called Phoenix Children’s Health.

The name was announced today by An Taoiseach Leo Varadkar and Health minister Simon Harris at an event turning the sod on two new health projects.

Construction begun on the new children’s hospital earlier this year. It will be located at the St James’s Hospital campus on the outskirts of Dublin city centre.

The project is projected to cost over €1 billion in full and is due to be completed in 2021.

When it is completed it will incorporate the staff and operations of Our Lady’s Children’s Hospital Crumlin, Temple Street Children’s University Hospital and Tallaght Hospital.

It was announced in August that the hospital will be fully secular.

The government came in for criticism yesterday after it was revealed by the Sunday Times that the board of the new hospital were challenging three fire safety conditions contained in its planning permission.

Speaking today, Harris said having a name for the new hospital made the project “even more real and meaningful”.

In a statement, the Department of Health said that the name “symbolises the birth of new opportunities”.

“The Phoenix is a mythological symbol of renewal, community regeneration, vision, hope and inspiration,” the statement reads.

It is a fitting and apt name for a service which will have a profound impact on the lives of children and their families in Ireland for generations to come.

Both Varadkar and Harris turned the sod on two new healthcare projects today.

A new children’s hospital outpatient centre at Connolly Hospital and the redevelopment of the National Rehabilitation Hospital in Dun Laoghaire into a 120-bed facility.

Typically just use every article to vent your anger at everything that is wrong with everyone and everything.
Some day, maybe, we might start to appreciate something and maybe look on the brightside. It’s amazing what can be done with a positive outlook and giving things the chance to succeed rather than counting the time until it fails and then say I told you so. This country thrives on being bloody miserable. Or maybe it’s just 95% of journal Contributers. (fact check my 95%. It could be 96.)

When we start describing poorly conceived and poorly executed projects as positive and adopt positive outlooks on negative aspects, that is just la la land.

Here is the deal. You stop being so negative and whiney about critical comments and just content yourself with your positive comments. Stop being so highly negative and judgmental. Just adopt the positive outlook that you profess to have.

There was always going to appeals to the application. It would be remiss not to review and appeal some of the decisions. Timings for appeals will have been considered in the overall delivery date. There is nothing to suggest that this could result in ‘significant delays’. Building a 1BN euro hospital is going to have its ups and downs an they just need to be managed.

But if you understood what you were saying you would realise that time allowed for something would not appear on a critical path, that is only for milestones! Just like you I do not have a copy of the plan so therefore neither of us has ANY BASIS to suggest a significant delay. That is just conjecture on your part. If you know anything about project planning you would agree that there will be time build into the plans for this.

So they want to build a hospital and have “Phoenix” in the name AND they want to remove certain fire safety equipment from it.

    @Thomas Meaney:

I would hazard a guess that it is called after the Phoenix Park which is located about 1 Km away. The park in the English language named ‘Phoenix Park’ comes from the Irish ‘fionn uisce’ meaning ‘clear water’ which I assume is referring to the river which the park is on the banks of.

@Nick Allen: jaysus Nick I’ve just been educated. Back in my non city Tipperary box for me. Could they not have come up with an Irish name for it though. Even “the Fionn Uisce” hospital would have been a tad better. Shortened to “the Fionn Hospital”
I dunno. Just throwing it out there.

I agree, the name doesn’t exactly roll off the tongue. I suspect most people will just call it the Children’s hospital or still call it James’ Hospital.

Don’t think our pediatric colleagues are that good yet.
And now they will definitely need the full sprinkler system installed to prevent headlines like “Phoenix hospital goes up in flames”
