John Giles at Ormond Square in Dublin this morning where he was unveiled as the parade Grand Marshal Sam Boal/Photocall Ireland

This year's Grand Marshal for the Patrick's Day parade is...

Footballing legend John Giles will lead the parade in Dublin city this year, two and a half months before Ireland plays in the European Championships.

FOOTBALL LEGEND JOHN Giles has been announced as the Grand Marshal for this year’s St Patrick’s Day parade in Dublin.

The RTE football pundit will lead the parade on March 17th, following in the footsteps – literally – of other sports stars such as Packie Bonner, Micheál Ó Muircheartaigh and Katie Taylor who have all been Grand Marshal in recent years.

The announcement comes on the day Ireland is to play the Czech Republic tonight as part of the run-up for this summer’s European Championships.

Gilesy said he was thrilled to be asked to be Grand Marshal and said it was a “huge honour”.

I have always been extremely proud to represent Ireland but that was usually on a football pitch, so this will be a completely different experience for me.

The Grand Marshal is chosen to honour someone for their outstanding achievements and contribution to Irish life.

This year’s Patrick’s Festival will highlight the country’s strong links to the world of science to celebrate Dublin being the European City of Science this year.

Were the passengers provided with or wearing life jackets?
They might have had some chance if they had.

@Fabian Lee: You didn’t follow the news at all …. but thank you for this enlightening comment. Nearly as idiot as Trumps comment to get planes in to extinguish the fire at Notre Dame in Paris

I thought the bigger cruiser had the right of way, & that the smaller vessel seemed to be crossing the main shipping lane.
Also looks as if life jackets were left unused on the vessel that sank.
