More Irish people now shopping online - survey

Those living in Dublin are more likely to look to the net for a bargain.

A NEW SURVEY has revealed that more Irish people are likely to shop online than in previous years.

Online consultant AMAS has published its quarterly State of the Net bulletin which shows that 43 per cent of Irish consumers bought something online during 2011.

This figure is up considerably from the 36 per cent recorded in 2010.

Although Ireland is on par with the EU27 average in terms of online consumption, it is way behind the UK where up to 71 per cent of people buy products and services while browsing the Internet.

Shoppers in Dublin and the west of Ireland are most likely to purchase online, according to the analysis of eCommerce activity.

In 2011, 50 per cent of those living in the capital bought something online, while 48 per cent of consumers in the west did.

It is understood that more people are going online in search of a bargain. Others are using it as a research tool before making a purchase.

Internet shopping is still more common among younger people, particularly 16 to 29 year olds.

However, there is a growing trend among so-called silver surfers to head online instead of the local stores. In 2011, 21 per cent of those aged 60 and 74 said they used the internet every day, compared with 14 per cetn the year before.

Online deal sites remain popular with Irish people with 57 per cent of those surveyed registered for at least one such site.

Almost half of the Irish adult population say they have a Facebook account, while just 11 per cent have signed up to Twitter.

There’s better value online. Recently got quality motor parts (inc delivery) for 48% less. We’re still being ripped off big time all over the shop!

Yeah, I went to Ford for a certain job and was quoted €360 for parts and labour. Labour would have been 30 minutes max.

Bought the parts online from an Irish retailer for €90 (exact same parts as Ford were using) and I did the job myself in 30 minutes…. Saved a lot of money doing it myself.

The online Irish stores are atrocious. I buy stuff online for friends and family as presents etc to save me shipping from the US, but more often than not have to order from a UK site, which is a shame.
Also some of the few Irish shopping sites that exist are laid out terribly. Look at powercity.ie, my god it’s like a five year old put it together and that check out is pretty bad.

And that goes for the online deal sites in Ireland too – some of the so called ‘deals’ are anything but.

still there’s an illusion that everything’s cheaper online! certainly the majority of stuff is! Its definitely alot easier and alot more enjoyable browsing round the net! but at the border competition amongst traders is certainly getting better!

Vat charged on all purchases unless already paid in another eu country. Vat in ireland for most goods set at 23% compared to 21% outside. Add savings in not paying high shop rents electricity ect means big savings. Buy something outside eu over gift value about €35? is subject to customs duty and excise plus vat. Comes down po if you get good advice and service from your local shop, buy from them and pay their markup, if not buy on the internet until they provide better value.
