GERMAN POLICE ARE investigating a possible explosive device close to a Christmas market in Potsdam, reviving fears of a repeat of last year’s terror attack that struck at the height of the festive season.
The device was uncovered in a package found at a pharmacy just off the Christmas market in central Potsdam, a picturesque city near Berlin.
Police said a pharmacist had sounded the alert after finding a canister with wires inside the package.
Investigators initially said in a tweet that “suspicions of an unconventional explosive device have been confirmed.”
But Brandenburg interior minister Karl-Heinz Schroeter later said a probe was still ongoing to determine “whether the device was actually capable of causing an explosion or not.”
Police found a canister filled with nails and powder, batteries and wires in the package, as well as a powerful firework of a type not allowed in Germany.
But investigators added that there was no sign of a detonator inside.
After clearing parts of the city centre and Christmas market, bomb disposal units defused the device shortly before 5pm.
Schroeter said officers were combing the area to check if other similar packages had been deposited.
“We are now carrying out searches because the package was delivered, apparently, and possibly other packages had been delivered nearby the Christmas market. That’s why we are only at the beginning of our job,” he said.
What is clear is that the scare, coming on the eve of the first Advent weekend, has sparked fear, said Schroeter. “We can see that it’s not possible to hold a proper Christmas celebration,” he said.
Christmas market organiser Peter Klemm told broadcaster NTV: “It’s not easy when you’re on the scene, we’re shocked. But the people here understand what’s going on and take the measures very seriously.”
“I’ve always felt safe in Potsdam. Now that feeling of security is ebbing away,” local resident Ingeborg Reetz told mass-market daily Bild.
Meanwhile, baker Erich Schroeter had kept his shop open for people displaced by the evacuation.
“We wouldn’t just put people out into the cold,” he said.
Germany has been on high alert for possible jihadist attacks after last December’s deadly assault at a Christmas market in central Berlin.
The attacker, Tunisian asylum seeker Anis Amri, hijacked a truck and murdered its Polish driver before killing another 11 people and wounding dozens more by ploughing the heavy vehicle through the market.
Four days later, while on the run, he was shot dead by Italian police in Milan.

Only a few years ago he was recruiting for Ógra Fianna Fáil in WIT, and defending the decision to bail out the banks. If he was ever going to leave Fianna Fáil, it would have been then when his former party systematically destroyed our country. He seemed like a nice lad personally, but if he thinks Renua is the opportunity he needs to get a seat in the Dáil – I’d suggest he was better off going independent. Renua are a laughing stock, and the last thing we need is a party of the 1930′s time-travelling to 2015 to try bring is back with them.

Patrick McKee has no loyalty to anybody except for getting elected as a TD. Because he didn’t get nomintaion he tried to get on ticket for 2016 election with his father/grandfather’s party Sinn Fein and then when that didn’t happen he jumped shipped to Renua. Remember he joined Fianna Fail during banking gaurantee so his values are a bit skewed to say the least and is only joining Lucinda because Gerry Adams didn’t want him. He has stabbed Michael Martin in the back who was grooming him to be senator, John Coonan who actually lost his Fianna Fail seat getting him elected and Bobby Alyward who he campaigned for a mere two weeks ago. The only person who is happy about this is John McGuinness who has been trying to get him out of Fianna Fail for ages and can now ask for Martin’s head on a plate if Bobby doesn’t get elected. . McKee will steal a lot of Bobby’s vote in city. Maybe even get some of Fine Gael’s so it might help even Sinn Fein. This political cuckoo has pushed out all the other birds from the Fianna Fail nest- beware Lucinda you could be next!

Fianna Fáil TD Timmy Dooley forced pensioners off the road with the obscene car tax on older cars. €700 for 10 yr old cars while the “well offs” who can afford new cars get the LOW CAR TAX of €280 p.a. This means the owners of older cars are also paying for the water bills of the “well offs”. The UK parliament refused to pass that law BUT Fianna Fail did. Bye Bye Fianna Fail … good riddance.

I’ve heard really good things about him. A friend of mine is friends with him. He’s really popular and apparently he got his council seat on the first count. Renua and Fianna Fáil aren’t politically very different really but Renua didn’t inflate and destroy our economy.
Lots of people voted for him because he promised a full independent review of the CAS which he later reneged on.

I think it is great news that young talented politician is interested in joining Renua Ireland, a party that wants to encourage open transparent politics and be inclusive of all of society, encouraging business and ensuring the vulnerable have excellent public services
