Tragic suicide of young girl shines light on issue of self-harm in children

Self-harm is being seen to begin at a younger age, said an Irish psychotherapist.

PARENTS ARE BEING urged to be open to speaking to their children about difficult issues such as self-harm and suicidal ideation after the tragic case of 11-year-old Milly Tuomey.

An inquest into the death of the young child from Dublin in January 2016 recorded a verdict of suicide.

Dublin Coroner’s Court heard that the child posted on Instagram about her intention to die on a certain date and that her parents also found a “suicide diary” along with medication indicating an attempt at self-harm.

The family did everything in their power to help Milly after they became aware of an Instagram post on 3 November 2015.

Fiona Tuomey, Milly’s mother, has since founded the Healing Untold Grief Group in order to help others and prevent future loss of life in the wake of her daughter’s death.

The case has highlighted the issue of self-harm among young children, something that is anecdotally beginning at a younger age according to child and adolescent psychotherapist Dr Colman Noctor.

“Issues like anorexia, anxiety and low mood are now becoming more observable in primary school-aged children where previously this would have been more prominent in secondary school,” he told TheJournal.ie.

Self-harm is especially worrying when it occurs in children. The associations involved between self-harm and suicide are anxiety provoking and strike a fear in the hearts of all parents of children of all ages. Although we cannot see self-harm and suicide as mutually exclusive, sometimes they can have very different intentions.

“Sometimes self-harm is viewed as a coping strategy and is not intended as a means to end one’s life, however, in other cases, self harm may indeed act as a gateway behaviour that may lead to more lethal acts.”

Whether the worry for parents is evidence that their child may be self-harming or that their child has spoken about suicide, research has suggested that talking openly with them is the first important step.

“The most important thing to establish is the ‘reason’ why a child is engaging in self-harm. Self-harm can be best understood as a means to cope with a problem, as opposed to being the problem in and of itself. The source of a child’s anxiety and unhappiness is perhaps the most important aspect to address,” Noctor explains.

In cases of suicidal ideation it has been shown that addressing it honestly with a child makes it less likely that they will act in a way that may put their life or health at risk.

For parents who are perhaps too upset or find it too difficult to talk to their child about these issues, they are encouraged to get advice from a GP or one of the organisations that work in this area.

When approaching a child, parents are also encouraged to engage with them in a manner that is calm and non-judgemental.

“This response is best when it is a concerned and understanding approach that is not overly histrionic or punitive, “ Noctor says.

A punitive reaction can risk driving the behaviour underground and promote more secrecy. The child needs to be encouraged to speak about the origin of their unhappiness and explain the motivation behind, or the perceived function of, their self-harm.

“Support them through this by whatever means necessary to help them develop skills to cope with their distress in a less maladaptive and more effective way,” he concludes.

That aside. What an inane comment to make. The English started the mess by voting to be out of EU without a clear idea of how that would be accomplished. It was a Welshman that put the border in place in the first place.

So to all the pro leaving EU we are here, we are remaining as part of the EU, there is a line between north and south so you deal with it without compromise and you better make damn sure it is great and best for the south.

Tony Blair was seeking re-election and there was a stand up discussion which involved inter alia Blair’s spokesman (was it Peter Mandelson) and something Mandelson said made Boulton look silly. Boulton totally lost it and came within An ace of striking Mandelson on screen. I have not come across any reason to change my view of Boulton after all these years

I put it to Adam Boulton that this week’s kerfuffle wouldn’t have been necessary but for the sheer ignorance of the bigger picture that Britain proved themselves guilty of in the Brexit referendum and if I may, at almost every other time in the empires history. It took the Irish to take the venom out of what is surely Britain’s dumbest decision in a generation. Kerfuffle might well describe the last week, but clusterf##k best describes the fallout of their initial mistake.

Can Britain not make a decision these days witjout blaming someone else for their own decision.

Coveny didn’t have the intelligence to counter the question and ask if he felt guilty for when they stole nothern Ireland through murder and terrorism in the first place. There would not have been any talks if that act of terror and slavery didn’t take place.

I feel, once the Uk leaves the eu, we should join the rest of Europe and drive on the right, it would open the market much more for us. As it is we will be the only state in the eu to drive on the left and we are not easy to get to once the Uk part ways making our unity with the eu harder, as most of our products come from the Uk and pass through it to get to us. We should be on the lines of bypassing the Uk and deal directly with our partnering states. Driving on the right would open our markets for vehicles to all of Europe overnight. That would just be the start of it. Get in fully or get off the pot.
We will be in a great position for anyone wanting to deal within the European markets start extending shannon airport.

The endless Anti-Irish rethoric, which is being constantly spun from certain sections of the British right-wing media, needs to be treated with complete and total disdain. They are an extension of the not very well informed and not very bright Leave Campaign who have now turned on attacking ‘The Southern Irish’ as they refer to us by. They have ultimately realised that they can no longer bully us on geopolitical issues and have decided to lash out at us like a wounded ‘Lion’, ( no pardon asked for the pun). Overall they are looking for someone blame for their knee jerk reaction to the misnomer that the ‘foreigners were coming to take the rest of their jobs’. To summarise, Adam Boulton is a pompous, up his own ass bigot! Ole, Ole, Ole, Ole, Ole,Ole, Ole.

It will take more than a stupid question to challenge Simon Coveney!!

Well I would say journalism is both challenging , asking hard question but also respecting. So both. Interviewer who lick interviewee’s ass is not a journalism. These days when politicians are full of shit is is especially important for journalist to be precise and ask out-of-the-box questions, which politicians usually don’t want to think about as they care of their end only. Without smart journalists politicians will do what they want without control, so good job Adam.

Rupert Murdoch and his media empire, including Sky News, are totally anti-european and have too much influence in the UK. The ‘kerfuffle’ was caused by Theresa May not getting her partners in Government onside. Boulton’s question should have been directed at May, not Coveney.

Bolton obviously hasn’t got a clue about the Irish or its troubles with the enforced British border – blaming Ireland for the shortcomings of a few Unionists who refuse to agree on anything isn’t Dublin’s fault they actually are in Westminister and are Britain’s problem now. The UK/EU (formerly known as the North/South) border only really became an issue with the result of Brexit. If Britain gets stuck with the cost of maintaining an Irish border it wont like it. It has been an invisable on for years but if it has to revert into a hard border again let the UK pay for all the hassle it’ll cause everyone here.

Coveney was clear and concise in this interview – good luck try getting the same result out of Foster and Co.

We Irish did get over ourselves, we got over a Famine that could have been avoided by our rulers at the time. We got over that, we have some of the greatest brains and talent so he better get over himself coz we are not going away. SKY ~ give me a break.
