Today will be cold, rainy and thundery with the frost set to return this evening

Weather warnings are in place all over the country.

TODAY IS SET to be another wet and windy day across the country, before a very cold, frosty night tonight and tomorrow night.

Met Éireann forecasts a particularly windy day along west and north-west coasts, with a status yellow warning for gusts of up to 110km/h in place till midnight tonight.

A rainfall warning is also in place in counties Donegal, Galway, Leitrim, Mayo and Sligo with heavy, thundery downpours expected to lead to as much as 50mm of rain by 1pm today.

There is also a general snow-ice warning for the country, which is in place until 8pm.

Gardaí are warning motorists to take extreme caution this morning along at the Sally Gap and along the Laragh/Roundwood Road (R755) in Wicklow and on the N16 Manorhamilton Road just outside Sligo town.

As the day goes on, we can expect widespread showers of rain, hail or sleet with a risk of thunder.

Tonight will be cold and frosty, with temperatures between 0 and 2 degrees, and icy patches developing in the midlands, east and north.

Most parts are actually set to be dry with some nice sunny spells tomorrow, but that will give way to lows of -3 degrees and more widespread frost into Saturday morning.

Looking ahead, temperatures will reach as high as 10 degrees at the weekend, with the relatively mild conditions to persist into next week.

@Martin Connolly: I don’t know how they can put people out on the streets at 7 a.m. on a freezing cold wet day, it’s sickening to say the least!

@Gus Sheridan:. It’s not like homelessness has only become an issue in the past decade. If blame is to be handed out to political parties, then you’re going to have to list every party involved in Government since the foundation of the state. That’s how long it’s been an issue.
