No foul play in death of Dutch woman in Gran Canaria

Police spoke to her Irish partner yesterday afternoon.

Updated 7.15pm

A DUTCH WOMAN whose death sparked a police search for her Irish ex-partner drowned in her Gran Canaria pool, an autopsy has found.

Pathologists found no signs the 46-year-old had died as a result of a crime, confirming police suspicions no foul play was involved.

Detectives spoke to an Irish man briefly yesterday afternoon after a search for him lasting several hours was halted when he showed up at the property at the Tauro resort near Mogan in the south of the island.

Further tests are now taking place on her blood and tissue samples as investigators try to find out exactly what happened.

Detectives rushed to the property yesterday morning after receiving a 999 call around 10.15am about a body lying next to the swimming pool of the property at the Tauro resort near Mogan in the south of the island.

The woman, a Dutch national, was pronounced dead at the scene.

Police sources said they were looking for her Irish partner so they could speak with him. Today officials said he was her ex-partner and she lived alone.

Ahead of the autopsy results, a spokesman for the Guardia Civil in Gran Canaria confirmed: “We are currently awaiting the results of an autopsy performed on a 46-year-old expat whose body was found at her home on Sunday morning.

The discovery was made by a friend who was staying at the house and alerted us.

“Several people including neighbours have been questioned as witnesses. No arrests have taken place.”

@Shane Hickey: I’m sure they have a name but it’s probably best to keep it out of the media

@Shane O Mahony: it’s really bad when I’m not sure which source has the wrong nationality for the deceased, yours or the journal!

@Misanthrope: Wasn’t she hoping to get on a Ryanair flight? Probably still stuck in an airport, keeping a wary eye out for murderers fleeing the country.
