Pearse Station is Ireland’s second busiest train station and the busiest commuter station. Sam Boal via RollingNews.ie

Pearse Station will close for 13 weekends over next 2 years to get a new roof

The 130-year-old Dublin station will under-go a refurbishment worth at least €10 million over the next two years.

WORK TO THE roof on Dublin’s Pearse Station will begin in the second half of next year, Iarnród Éireann has said.

Extensive works worth up to €10 million are needed to upgrade the roof, which dates back to the 1880s.

Because of the extent of the work involved, the station will close on 13 weekends between August 2018 and June 2020. This closure is to allow for “round-the-clock works”, which involves lifting in sections of the new roof.

During these weekends, the northside Dart, Maynooth and Drogheda services would operate to and from Connolly Station, with the southside Dart and Rosslare services operating to and from Grand Canal Dock.

Iarnród Éireann says the current roof “is in poor condition”, and protective mesh netting has been in place in the station below roof level in recent years to protect customers and rail services, due to the corrosion which has occurred.

The project will be funded by the National Transport Authority, Iarnród Éireann said.

    @JJ: It’s not like they’re fixing a flat roof on a extension. Obviously the idea of plastic surgery on a leaking roof appeals to your taste. But when something dates back as far as 1880, it requires a bit more expertise than a week long botch job.

    @Paul Linehan: its not exactly predating Roman times either. I didn’t see any Leonardo DaVinci ideas applied or any Gothic or Ionian type pillars a that were used 2000 years ago. C’mon lull the other one. I would like the Irish renovate Castilo De Angelo in Rome.

    @Brendan Mason: Your comparison of something 2000 years ago and 140 years is strange. It’s a bit like comparing a Dublin Georgian building and the Newgrange monument. Neither looks the same, but both have the same historical value.

    @Declan Crowley: pretty sure they are spreading it out to cause minimal disruption to the dart and rail lines. 13 weekends running 24 hours a day would account to over a normal week per weekend. You’d rather close the station for 13 weeks straight and shut down the commuting line right in the middle? Cop on t’fck

    @Declan Snow: It wouldn’t be closed for 13 weeks. 26 days is less than a month. They could use Tara Street Station to let passengers off and have it done and dusted in February of any year.

    Look, this is IE we are talking about;
    1) the project will already be padded and over costed – however
    2) when the time comes it will likely be – late, over-budget and faulty – as is just about everything else they do…oh and the roofers will go on strike half way through so that the can be on the same pay scale as some lads that did a roof on a cow shed in Kerry
    AND
    the staff that would otherwise be working those weekends will negotiate some kind of disturbance money (for lying at home ) and still come away with more money….
