The new Polo is here - along with two other new Volkswagens

Customers can now order the new Polo, T-Roc and Tiguan Allspace.

BURSTING ONTO THE Irish market this week are three new cars from Volkswagen.

Launched all at once are the new Polo supermini, T-Roc compact crossover and Tiguan Allspace SUV (which can be had with five or seven seats – read our review here).

The new Polo supermini has grown in size and is now 81mm longer and has a 92mm longer wheelbase than the model it replaces. The boot has grown too and can now hold 351 litres (71 litres larger than before).

In Ireland, the new Polo is offered in Trendline and Comfortline specification, and a range topping GTI version will join the range later on.

Paddy McGrath Paddy McGrath

The Polo can be had with a 1.0-litre three-cylinder petrol engine with outputs of 65hp or 75hp mated with a five-speed manual gearbox or a 1.0-litre TSI petrol engine with 95hp and seven-speed DSG gearbox. The diesel options are a 1.6-litre TDI with either 95hp and a seven-speed DSG transmission or 80hp and a five-speed manual transmission.

Entry level Trendline models with the 65hp engine are priced from €16,795.

The GTI version is powered by a 200hp 2.0-litre TSI engine with six-speed automatic gearbox and is priced from €32,395.

Paddy McGrath Paddy McGrath

We’ve already driven the T-Roc (read the review here) but specifically for the Irish market it can be had with a 115hp 1.0-litre TSI four-cylinder petrol engine with six-speed manual gearbox, a 150hp 1.5-litre TSI four-cylinder petrol engine with six-speed manual or seven-speed DSG automatic gearbox and a 150hp 2.0-litre TDI four-cylinder diesel engine with six-speed manual or seven-speed DSG gearbox. More engines will arrive later in the year including a 11hp 1.6-litre TDI.

The trim levels available are T-Roc, Design and Sport with the entry-level T-Roc trim 115hp petrol model costing from €24,750rrp.

Paddy McGrath Paddy McGrath

The Tiguan Allspace is a longer version of the Tiguan and can be had with an optional third row of seats for a €770 premium. At 164cm tall I fit in these optional seats but it is a squeeze and they are best suited to children. If you opt for the five-seat Tiguan Allspace you gain a bigger boot and more space over the regular Tiguan.

For the Irish market the Tiguan Allspace can be had in Trendline, Comfortline and Highline trim and comes with one petrol option, a 150hp  1.4-litre TSI mated to a six-speed manual gearbox. The diesel options are a 150hp 2.o-litre TDI until that can be had with a six-speed manual or seven-speed DSG gearbox both of which can be had with 4Motion all-wheel drive. There is also the option of a 190hp or 240hp 2.0-litre TDI both of which come with a seven-speed DSG and 4Motion all-wheel drive transmission.

Starting price for the five-seat version is €34,050 and the seven-seat model starts at €34,820.

There has been conflict in this regions between the Chinese government and Islamists for years, people are regularly getting killed (as in, every few weeks). Why only report it now?

Because media outlets have a finite amount of time and space and have to partly reflect the interests of their readership, viewership or listenership. Uighur unrest is generally not newsworthy for small Irish publications. With the events of last week in France and Nigeria, it’s a lot more newsworthy.

The news isn’t a list of everything that happens on the planet, nor is it necessarily a ranked list of death tolls. The media has to weigh what thinks will resonate with an audience. By necessity, that requires a degree of filtering.

Dunno about that, Genghis Khan slaughtered a fair few of them. 1.2 million in one city alone. The sacking of Urgench.

At the same time the Normans were invading Ireland and bringing their Christian values with them. Or were they, was it purely about greed and conquest. I suppose the first homo sapien to emerge from the horn of Africa and dream about world conquest is the money king.

How refreshing to see the hackneyed use of quotations with the term “terrorist” whenever something like this happens in China.
