US gov shutdown: Trump blames Democrats for being 'too concerned with illegal immigrants'

Thousands of government workers will be sent home without pay until the crisis is resolved.

Updated at 1pm

PRESIDENT DONALD TRUMP marked the first anniversary of his inauguration today with his government in shutdown, accusing Democrats of taking Americans hostage with their demands and saying they “could have easily made a deal”.

As the clock struck midnight, in the absence of an agreed spending plan, federal services began to come to a halt or be scaled back.

Essential services and military activity will continue but many public sector workers will be sent home without wages and even serving soldiers will not be paid until a deal is reached to reopen the US government.

“Democrats are far more concerned with Illegal Immigrants than they are with our great Military or Safety at our dangerous Southern Border,” Trump wrote in an early morning tweet.

“They could have easily made a deal but decided to play Shutdown politics instead. #WeNeedMoreRepublicansIn18 in order to power through mess!”

“This is the One Year Anniversary of my Presidency and the Democrats wanted to give me a nice present,” he added.

Vice President Mike Pence had earlier raised the issue of soldiers’ salaries after meeting with US military personnel on a stopover in Shannon Airport in Ireland ahead of a three-country tour of the Middle East.

“You have troops headed down range to Kuwait for six months and they are anxious about the fact that they aren’t going to get paid right away,” he told reporters. “It’s unconscionable.”

‘Schumer Shutdown’

A deal had appeared likely yesterday afternoon, when Trump seemed to be close to an agreement with Democratic Senate minority leader Chuck Schumer on a measure to prevent the expulsion of undocumented migrants who arrived in the country as children.

But no such compromise was in the language that reached Congress for a stop-gap motion to keep the government open for four more weeks while a final arrangement is discussed – and Republicans failed to win enough Democratic support to bring it to a vote.

The White House lashed out at Schumer, blaming him for the shutdown and doubling down: Trump’s spokeswoman Sarah Sanders declared that he would never negotiate an immigration deal until Congress agrees to resume normal government spending.

“Senate Democrats own the Schumer Shutdown,” she declared.

“We will not negotiate the status of unlawful immigrants while Democrats hold our lawful citizens hostage over their reckless demands,” she said.

Republican majority leader Mitch McConnell echoed the White House’s language, but Schumer fought back, blaming Trump for leading him to believe a deal was possible on the immigration dispute but then failing to bring his own party along.

Responsibility to govern

“Every American knows the Republican Party controls White House, the Senate, the House – it is their job to keep the government open. It is their job to work with us to move forward,” Schumer told the Senate, after the 50 to 49 vote.

Schumer added he had also offered to discuss the possibility of building a wall along the border with Mexico, a key campaign pledge made by Trump that is anathema to many Democrats.

“Even that was not enough to entice the president to finish the deal,” he said.

Democrats accused Republicans of poisoning chances of a deal and pandering to Trump’s populist base by refusing to fund a program that protects 700,000 “Dreamers” – undocumented immigrants who arrived in the US as children – from deportation.

The president shelved plans to fly to Florida to celebrate at his Mar-a-Lago estate the first anniversary of his inauguration to remain in Washington to ride out the storm.

Republicans have a tenuous one-seat majority in the Senate but would have needed to lure some Democrats to their side to get a 60 vote supermajority to bring the motion forward. They fell ten votes short.

The measure brought to Congress would have extended federal funding until 16 February and reauthorised for six years a health insurance program for poor children – a long-time Democratic objective.

But it would have cut the Deferred Action on Childhood Arrivals program, known as DACA, that affects Dreamers.

White House officials insisted there was no urgency to fix DACA, which expires 5 March.

There have been four government shutdowns since 1990. In the last one in 2013, more than 800,000 government workers were put on temporary leave.

International ratings agency Fitch said a partial shutdown was unlikely to affect America’s AAA/stable rating for US sovereign debt.

Negotiations with the White House on a bipartisan compromise on DACA blew up last week after Trump reportedly referred to African nations and Haiti as “shithole countries.”

The Senate was set to reconvene at noon on Saturday, with McConnell seeking a new stop-gap measure to fund the government till February 8.

What actual facts am I missing?

This shutdown is centred on DACA and disagreement between Republicans and Democrats over its future. DACA was set up to facilitate illegal immigrants. By shutting down the government over this, they are hurting American families over illegal immigrants.

What “facts” are missing in this description?

@Eleanor of Aquitaine: I’d be prepared to consider your comments (and the pro-Trump comments of other regular Trump supporters on The Journal) if there was any recognition by you of relative failures, mistakes, inexperience, etc. by Trump. But you are consistently, blindly, partisan and misdirect all the time. That does not equal credibility. Why anyone would paint things in black and white in a grey and extremely problematic world is beyond me. To blindly support anyone is foolhardy. I don’t know if this is due to you not wanting to loose face (which is typical of pretty much everyone I’ve known), but no politician or political candidate is worthy of that non-critical support. The tone and content of Trump supporters has beggared belief since he was elected. His White House administration has been shambolic and he is 100% responsible for his own staff appointments and decisions within the White House. He cannot blame anyone else but himself for that. He specifically promised the American people a well-oiled and efficient administration.

@Eleanor of Aquitaine: Let this sink in..people with DACA visas are not “illegal”. They have DACA visas and to qualify for DACA you have to been under 16 when you entered the US, you have to be in school in the US or have gone to school in the US and achieved a general education diploma, have absolutely no misdemeanors or any criminal record…and even at that you still need to renew your DACA visa every 2 years to stay legally in the US

@Thought for Food: I’ll tell you what facts you’re missing.

You’re (deliberately?) ignoring the fact that a bipartisan DACA deal was on the table that Trump had tacitly approved of, before he decided to lose his head and start spouting profanity about foreign countries.

His catastrophic implosion caused the deal, which was ready to go, to fall apart, and the subsequent failure to pass the federal budget. Yet you’re here blaming Democrats? Explain to me how that works, if you wouldn’t mind.

Trump cocked up the *bipartisan* deal that was planned to avert this crisis, on purpose. You don’t get to go pointing the finger at other people here.

Funny that the guy who wrote Art of the Deal is actually much better at wrecking deals. Political incompetence on a whole new level.

@neilo: The question is actually a bit leading though – they should not have prioritized ‘trump and republicans’ in the question wording. Not sure why that answer option is even clubbed together either – splitting out trump, republicans, democrats would have been better/more interesting. Largest proportion was probably for trump specifically.

It’s already well known that Twitter skews their trending algorithms to favour liberal topics.

This is the type of total political failure, that effects all Americans in a practical way, that can forever stain a presidency and may even end it. Before the usual Trump fellow travellers start whining about the shutdown in 2013, I would point out that was a tactic by a Republican controlled congress, what is their excuse now that The Republicans control all branches of Government.

Trump will say whatever he believes will play to the citizens who are likely to vote for him. There have been many bad U.S. Presidents, but Trump is doing damage to the Presidency itself. Nixon was highly intelligent and politically astute, but his psychology was completely unsuited to holding the presidency. Trump is interested only in promoting brand Trump. Whatever happens he will come out of all this with a best selling book about his time in the White House. I understand that many U.S. citizens genuinely wanted change and that the U.S. is facing enormous problems, but Trump is not the answer (and neither was Hillary Clinton).

Trump is not your president, what he does or say’s is none of your business unless you are American. Every chance you get you are on here attacking him.Just like all bullies you call him names, a person you know nothing about, except what you read in MSN, the biggest fake news source on the planet, who have an agenda against Trump. Who do you work for?, do you get paid to demonize this man? just like the fake protesters all over America, paid to come out and protest against Donald Trump by sinister organisations. You are all so pathetic, not a brain cell between you. But no matter what his haters throw at him, he smiles and soldiers on, he does not care, he was elected to do a job and he is going to do it. A remarkable man.
