The man returned to his home in Ballivor on 17 January to find two armed men in balaclavas waiting for him.

GARDAÍ IN CO Meath have appealed for information from the public after a man was assaulted in his home by two armed burglars.

The victim in question, a man in his late 40s, returned to his home at Clonaycavan, near Ballivor in the west of the county, on Wednesday 17 January at about 7pm.

He found two men inside the house wearing balaclavas, and armed with a handgun and a knife.

The men put a noose around the victim’s neck and dragged him around the house in a search for cash and valuables, local radio station LMFM reports.

“The victim didn’t see the transport used by these men – it’s a rural area so you have to assume they had transport,” Garda Sergeant Ronan Farrelly told the station.

We’d have to ask that anyone in the Ballivor or Clonaycavan areas, between 7pm and 8pm last Wednesday, if they noticed anything unusual or suspicious to contact the detective branch at Trim Garda Station.

A Garda spokesperson confirmed that “an aggravated burglary did take place” and that the “injured party returned home and was assaulted by two males in dark clothing”.

Investigations are ongoing.

Anyone with any information regarding the incident is asked to contact gardaí at Ballivor Garda Station on 046 9546002, Trim Garda Station on 046 9481547, or the Garda Confidential Line on 1800 666 111.

Why is this happening, I wonder if it’s the fact that when caught and convicted even though they may have convictions the length of your arm, they will if the victim is lucky get 2 years sentence. System needs to be overhauled and quickly.

@Gavin R: You know why, I know why, the dog on the street knows why…. BUT our judges perched in their ivory towers? Nope, they are so detached from the reality of this it beggars belief. Mind you, if it happened to one of them or their family you can be sure a suspended/pitiful sentence would be a non runner!

@Gavin R: When caught cut their finger off. Or give them the same punishment X 10 that they put their victim through.

These people will carry on because there is not enough to stop them.

@Gavin R: Asking people to pay more taxes so prisons could be built to hold these thugs is the only solution. but the blueshirts don’t believe in taxation because it impinges on the wealthy.

@Gavin R: One thing is pitifully obvious THE JUDICIARY DON’T CARE ABOUT THE WELFARE AND WELLBEING OF THE ORDINARY PEOPLE WHOSE TAXES ARE PAYING THEIR MASSIVE SALARIES!

It’s well known that perpetrators of these crimes will have their every need catered for by the State and there is little deterrent to stop repeat offending. If the State had to spend the same amount of money and resources looking after the victims of crime you’d soon see some major efforts to reduce the crime level.

Those that carry out Aggravated burglary’s should get a mandatory beating with a baseball bat, once a week! For a year, preferably by the victim!

@Thomas Heffernan: agree public stone throwing should be mandatory.l, but wait for the PCB to kick in and state that’s against human rights and you can’t beat someone for what they’ve done in the past.

We should campaign for people who intimidate old people in their home to get min sentence of 20 years.
    Life if they attack them.

In fairness to the gardai I’d say it is difficult for them to get motivated to do their jobs when these guys will end up getting their 150th suspended sentence if caught. Need to do away with suspended sentences.

@Stephenkee: the biggest problem is concurrent sentencing. If a burglar is out on bail for a crime, and knows they’re getting six months, they can do a hundred more similar crimes knowing that the same sentence will effectively cover them if they’re caught.

Many of the people who commit these type of crimes have done so many times leaving behind terrified victims…it’s my belief that the courts have failed the law abiding people of this country for a long long time and a new approach is needed into how we deal with the people who commit these crimes..i would suggest that 1 approach is that upon conviction the background of these people should be investigated where and how did they obtain their money…in other words hit them in the pocket and hit them hard.

There has to be serious ramifications for individuals who perpetrate such a savage and brutal act!!!! It beggars belief that those savages place money and property above a human life. Dirty dogs!! To put that man through that is horrific!!! I hope he’ll be ok. It will effect him psychologically for some time. I hope our judges who sit in their Ivory Towers and who are far removed from reality, will send a strong message to those evil and heartless thugs!!!!

    It’s all about the money
    The lawyer have to live
The woman that stole 100 k
Got 10 years course the judge said
    She would never offend again
If she was a repeat offender she would have got a suspended sentence as she would keep the gravy train going
