The 9 at 9 Nine things to know this morning…

EVERY MORNING, TheJournal.ie brings you nine things you need to know before 9am…

1. #GREECE: EU finance ministers meeting in Brussels have finally signed off on a second bailout for Greece, worth around €130billion. Michael Noonan has said the agreement means the troika can now focus on a better deal for Ireland, RTÉ reports.

2. #FRONTLINE: Both the BAI and the Cabinet are set to discuss Seán Gallagher’s demands for an inquiry into the controversial RTÉ Frontline presidential debate. Meanwhile Leo Varadkar has accused RTÉ’s coverage of being biased towards “centre-left” and “liberal” political views, the Irish Times reports.

3. #IRISH RAIL: A young girl remains in intensive care in hospital this morning after being struck by a train last night, RTÉ reports. The incident happened just after 7.30pm near Tipperary town.

4. #VITA CORTEX: The 32 former Vita Cortex workers are due to begin talks at the Labour Relations Commission today, in the hope of resolving their months-long redundancy dispute. The workers have said they have their “fingers and toes crossed” for the talks.

5. #AFGHANISTAN: The US soldier suspected of killing 16 Afghan civilians in a shooting spree had suffered a traumatic brain injury and recent marital problems, ABC News reports. Meanwhile militants have launched an attack on the site of the killings, according to the BBC.

6. #FACEBOOK: Facebook is being sued by Yahoo, in the first major legal battle between tech companies over social media. The lawsuit relates to Facebook’s advertising systems, which Yahoo says break 10 of its patents according to Reuters.

7. #SEXUAL ABUSE: The Dublin Rape Crisis Centre has seen a significant increase in calls since the release of the Ryan report last year, and more allegations of child abuse. A spokesperson told RTÉ’s Morning Ireland that the organisation faces a funding crisis.

8. #RED MEAT: Bad news for steak-lovers – eating red meat of any type significantly increases your risk of premature death. Even small amounts of meat can have a serious impact, according to a major long-term study reported by the LA Times.

9. #GHOST HUNT: A team of paranormal investigators have set up shop in Limerick’s Milk Market in the hope of tracking down a supernatural presence, after locals reported eerie events and unexplained sights on CCTV. The search is being led by Ghost Hunt Ireland, the Limerick Leader reports.

I wonder what other factors were at work in the lives of those who died during the study? Too much loose ends all over the place.

For instance, what jumps out there is that, even though it’s a sweeping statement, people who are vegetarian are much more likely to be health conscious (even Conscious) individuals in a global sense.

It’d be interesting to know the philosophy of the researchers (and if it was sponsored, by whom), to do a devil’s advocate on them doing what could amount to rhetorical research.

…also, what they said about saturated fats, nitrates from preservatives, and chemicals from high temperature cooking is vague. What about organic/grass fed kinds of beef with no preservative? And what kinds of fats? To my understanding, a moderate amount of those organic fats is healthy.

Also, bacon and hot dogs are not ‘processed *red* meat’. Grains and nuts are not a ‘substitute’ for a meat portion in the sense of being in the same kind of food category. (On that note – go do a study on people who eat a lot of grains, and then we’ll talk dangerous foods).

It just sounds like hysteria to me – even the way the headline was worded and sequenced “ALL RED MEAT IS BAD FOR YOU ….new study says”

Well said Gearoid, another piece written by an arts student about a science subject. Obviously with a ridiculous statement from those loony scientists, thereby keeping the readers dumb and unquestioning.Nefarious stuff!

I eat mostly eggs for my protein, but I’m having some organic striploin tomorrow goddamnit!

When I get my nutritional advice from incendiary second-hand reporting in the LA Times – that’ll be the day.

Ornish is nuts too, if he thinks meat is what is messing up the planet. Try CEREALS. Which amount basically to sugar, released at an alarming, or slightly less alarming rate depending on how much they are refined (and have additional gunk added to them to make them addictive, and give the kids AD fucking D).

Although, most of the way animals are raised most of the time is an absolute nightmare, it’s true, and it ought to be improved.

I just find the world of vegetarianism to be full of well-meaning though naive myths. Depriving people of proper dairy and proper meat which has not come from drugged, badly fed, and traumatized animals has resulted in a lot of the proliferation of chronic diseases that people who eat whole, unrefined foods (including good meat and dairy) simply don’t suffer from.

If people want to be vegetarians, that’s obviously cool, and it’s a magnanimous thing to care about animal welfare. But the amount of well-fitting, though completely bogus information used to back up their choices is annoying. They can be completely righteous and obnoxious about letting you know about it too. Why was no counter to Ornish mentioned in the article? Of course he would agree with that study. It makes me think the article was just an ad taken out in the guise of an article, by some movers and shakers behind the scenes.

Or as my father often said: all things in moderation

I ignore all these so-called findings.

A varied and mixed diet is what I feed my family, and cook 99.9% of them from scratch, i.e. fresh foods.
