Trump tweets support for NRA - but backs raising gun possession age to 21

He made the comments on Twitter.

PRESIDENT DONALD TRUMP endorsed stricter gun-control measures today, including raising the minimum age to 21 for possessing a broader range of weapons than at present.

He tweeted his strongest stance as president one day after an emotional White House session where students and parents poured out wrenching tales of lost lives and pleaded for action.

Trump said on Twitter: “I will be strongly pushing Comprehensive Background Checks with an emphasis on Mental Health. Raise age to 21 and end sale of Bump Stocks!”

Shortly afterwards, he tweeted his support for the National Rifle Association, saying:

Tweet by @Donald J. Trump Donald J. Trump / Twitter Donald J. Trump / Twitter / Twitter

The current federal minimum age for buying or possessing handguns is 21, but the limit is 18 for rifles including assault-type weapons such as the AR-15 used by a former student in last week’s attack on a Florida high school that killed 17 students and staff members.

A White House official said the president was not endorsing or ruling out any specific policy.

Trump also said he will be meeting with lawmakers today to discuss school safety, and that next year he will meet with governors on the issue.

In another tweet, Trump repeated his urgent call for trained teachers or others in schools to carry guns as a deterrent to attacks.

“If a potential ‘sicko shooter’ knows that a school has a large number of very weapons talented teachers (and others) who will be instantly shooting, the sicko will NEVER attack that school. Cowards won’t go there…problem solved. Must be offensive, defense alone won’t work!” Trump tweeted.

He has previously expressed an interest in efforts to strengthen the federal background check system. It was not clear if he would back closing loopholes that permit loose private sales on the internet and at gun shows.

NRA

Yesterday, the National Rifle Associated quickly rejected any talk of raising the age for buying long guns to 21.

“Legislative proposals that prevent law-abiding adults aged 18-20 years old from acquiring rifles and shotguns effectively prohibits them for purchasing any firearm, thus depriving them of their constitutional right to self-protection,” the group said in a statement.

In a speech today, the NRA head Wayne LaPierre said that the NRA wants armed guards outside schools – and would fund them.

Speaking to US conservatives, he said that gun control advocates “hate the NRA, hate the Second Amendment, they hate individual freedom”. He also said that the elites don’t care about children and that if they did, “they would protect them”.

“They care more about control,” he said, saying that in wanting to eradicate second amendment freedoms, they want to eradicate all individual freedoms.

Yesterday, Trump listened intently at the White House as students described the horror of the shootings at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland Florida. The students and their parents appealed to him to press for stricter gun controls.

“I turned 18 the day after” the shooting, said tearful student Samuel Zeif. “Woke up to the news that my best friend was gone. And I don’t understand why I can still go in a store and buy a weapon of war. An AR. How is it that easy to buy this type of weapon? How do we not stop this after Columbine? After Sandy Hook?”

Trump promised to be “very strong on background checks.” And he indicated he supported allowing some teachers and other school employees to carry concealed weapons to be ready for intruders.

Gun violence

The president had invited the teen survivors of school violence and parents of murdered children in a show of his resolve against gun violence in the wake of last week’s shootings in Florida and in past years at schools in Connecticut and Colorado.

Trump asked his guests to suggest solutions and solicited feedback. He did not fully endorse any specific policy solution, but pledged to take action and expressed interest in widely differing approaches.

Besides considering concealed carrying of weapons by trained school employees, a concept he has endorsed in the past, he said he planned to go “very strongly into age, age of purchase.” And he said he was committed to improving background checks and working on mental health.

Most in the group were emotional but quiet and polite.

But Andrew Pollack, whose daughter Meadow was killed last week, noted the previous school massacres and raged over his loss, saying this moment isn’t about gun laws but about fixing the schools.

“It should have been one school shooting and we should have fixed it and I’m pissed. Because my daughter, I’m not going to see again,” said Pollack. “King David Cemetery, that is where I go to see my kid now.”

Trump embraced gun rights during his presidential campaign, though he supported some gun control before he became a candidate.

@Butch Francis: there was once a law banning alcohol in the US constitution – you may have heard of it – but then people discovered it was crazy and removed it when it proved to cause more harm than not.

You see things can change there Butch when humans educate and evolve… oh wait – ‘evolve’ is an issue too isn’t it. So like when 300 years ago a law was made for its time with single action weapons does not mean that people should be carrying around weapons that can kill hundreds on a whim – for a person to kill 17 people by themselves when the constitution was framed – by the time they reloaded they could be taken out with a child with a toothbrush.

If a gunman can walk into a military base like Fort Hood with 100% of the populace ‘highly trained” in firearms use, and still murder 13 people with a pistol, do you honestly think that 20% of teachers having a gun is going to stop the next killer who may have an AR-15?

@Tom Tom: That’s a really poor analogy. The soldiers in Fort Hood weren’t armed. Their guns were “secured” elsewhere under the rules of the base – they couldn’t get at them. I’m not saying that the narrative of a more-guns solution is right, only that Fort Hood definitely doesn’t disprove it.

Its a disgrace.

Why not grenades, rocket launchers and missiles like ICBM’s?

After all, like M16′s these also didn’t exist in 1780′s, but they are after all “arms” so why can’t a citizen also own them? Why should the government control them and restrict responsible missile and ICBM ownership?

@Philip G Roark: the FBI and local law enforcement are entirely responsible for this atrocity as they failed to act on countless warnings. The local police department were called to the psychos house 39 times ffs.

Trump is owned by the NRA. They bankrolled his campaign for the presidency to the tune of €31 million!
He wont do anything against their interests.

    @Alec Ladd:
Why stop there… Arm the students… Only good bully is a dead bully….

There is so much simple stuff they can do before they get to the point that US has a lacks attitude to gun ownership…

    Here is a start:
Repeal the Dickey amendment – This is an amendment that restricted funding for research into gun violence and its effects on public health. Even Dickey wants that.

Increase the buying a gun to over 21

Allow the ATF to computerise their records, seriously there is a law that bans the ATF from computerising. So all records are held and stored in paper, running a gun trace takes days and sometimes weeks.
    https://www.usatoday.com/story/news/nation/2015/10/27/firearms-national-tracing-center-atf/74401060/

    Ban bum stocks…

The cost of mass shootings are usually paid by either the tax payer or the victims. The offender is either dead or going to jail and wouldn’t have the millions to compensate the various people involved. Think about someone paralysed for life, the cost of care. How about insurance. Want to own a gun, how about insurance against that gun been used in a crime or accidentally to harm someone. NRA already sells insurance…

@David Carino: Teachers who have concealed carry permits and carry firearms for protection outside school should be allowed to do so inside school. Gun Free Zones are soft targets.

@Butch Francis: Lets hope that those teachers get better training than the police officers at the LA & NY departments ;-) Just looked at a few stats from a few years back, & i was surprised to see that their % for hitting targets -was at 29% & 34% …yikes.lets hope they’ve improved …

@Ronan Gallagher: he is selling the idea, does it matter who’s idea it was originally? And he had it all worked out, cowards, gun free zones, trained teachers etc. Audience member who proposed it was probably a plant.

What is the NRA’s position on “Ghost Guns”, which can be bought legally without any documentation, by anybody? No background checks needed, just a credit card.

You just need to be a bit handy to assemble them.

I feel like this is a warranted adjustment. Not sure how I feel about arming teachers. Would prefer to see increased background checks.
