THERE WERE DRAMATIC scenes at Sandycove in south Dublin today as passersby came to the rescue of a swimmer.
Footage posted on social media shows people rushing to help the woman, who got into difficulty while swimming.

The coastal road in Dun Laoghaire was closed today due to high winds and flooding.
The gardaí confirmed the incident today, stating that a few people took to the water during the code red weather alert.
They have urged people to act responsibly and not to go swimming in any lakes, rivers or in the sea.
A red alert snow-ice warning has been extended until 9am for Dublin, Kildare, Wexford, Wicklow and Meath. It will be valid from 4pm today until 9am tomorrow morning.

Regardless of how experienced a swimmer you are, there is absolutely no reason to go swimming in waters like this. It’s beyond reckless and puts lives in danger. People have been swept out to sea in attempts to rescue such swimmers. I personally knew one who didn’t make it back. So much hurt and pain could be avoided people just used some common sense.
@Dj: it was just on the radio. Apparently, according to a witness she just walked off immediately after getting out without saying thanks as presumably didn’t want to face the music.

Yes the person swimming was irresponsible but can we take a moment to consider why anyone would stand by and film a potentially fatal drowning instead of going to help? Even if you didn’t feel there was anything you could do to help, what on earth possesses anyone to take their phone out and start filming? Just don’t understand that mentality

I came on a terrible accident few years back, young woman pedestrian killed instantly by a lorry, and yes there were a couple of people who had their phones out.
I think one of the county fire services sent out a press release complaining of people doing the same at an accident.

@SoCoDu: good on you I think you’ve explained yourself perfectly. On a related note I took photos of a fatal car accident in recent months and provided them to the Gardai who thanked me for my assistance as it formed part of their investigation. Several years back I took photos of a car crash (non-fatal) at a badly marked crossroads junction in Ashtown while the fire services were attending. There had been several near misses. I used the photos to get the management company to erect proper signage. Lots of reasons that people take photos at accident scenes, not all are macabre spectators.
This unfortunately is the world we live in. If you had a fire in the middle of town with signs saying do not put your hand in the fire you can be sure some muppet would end up in a&e with 3rd degree burns. There’s nothing you can do about people like that other than hope they don’t breed

This is the type of carry on that puts the lives of rescue workers at huge risk. Everywhere is telling you about a red weather warning and still some clown decides to go swimming in it, the mind boggles. Should be charged or at least a hefty fine for the recklessness of his carry on.

I don’t know how she got out there. But there was a fellow idiot on Twitter who’s hoping to take a dinghy out tomorrow. Why can’t people give this miss for a few days, wait for calmer seas? It’s okay to miss a few days in the water. Take up yoga or something else as well, you can still exercise.

Every so often we’ve had fools putting the mountain rescue volunteers at risk when they go on their mountain trek get injured or get lost in misty/foggy conditions. The people attempting to rescue this stupid person were very brave and put their own lives at risk. She should be made care for homeless as a lesson in gratitude

I knowI’m wasting time in asking for a return to that fine phrase “to take part in”, which began to be replaced with “to partake in” in the 1990s by pretentious politicians and others interested in projecting status and by attempting sophistication. If some partakes of a game, they are watching it; on the other hand, if they take part in it, they are playing, officiating etc. i know the hope is forlorn, but I can’t help expressing it. After all, it’s the taking part that counts…not the partaking.
