    @Theresa O’Donohoe: the risks from physical inactivity outweigh the risk of cycling by a factor of thousands and in my experience the vast majority of drivers are careful and courteous. Of course there are a few idiots, whipped up by the 30cent a text call hysteria encouraged on Newstalk, who consider cyclists to be legitimate tarfets, but I’m cycling for best part of 40 years and I’m not sure the roads are any more dangerous now than they were. And the more people that cycle, the safer it gets.

    There was actually a report last week stating cycling in Dublin is actually worse for your health in certain demographics over certain distances given the likelihood you’ll be involved in an accident. Which is totally nuts.

    @John Smith: i agree John. It flies in the face of every other study i know of, anyway. In Britain it is estimated that inactivity causes 37,000 premature deaths per year (and billions of pounds) many of these deaths could be prevented by as little as 30 minutes of reasonably strenuous activity every day, like cycling to work for example. This is why its vital to put in place cycling infrastructure. It didn’t just happen in Holland that people took up cycling as their primary mode of transport in the cities, it was the result of government policy, and that policy was a result of a public outcry/protest there, over the numbers of roads deaths.

    @Jimmyjoe Wallace:

    Well, I cycle 150 to 200 km a week. Nearly every day there is a near miss, I am a confident cyclists that follows the rules, but there’s always some clown that wants to teach you a lesson. That said, it relaxes my mind, keeps me stress free, has made me insanely fit, costs me zero and gets me there faster. I totally love it. The infrastructure is shameful. When you see a car parked in a cycle lane most of the time they are legally allowed to, given that many cycle lanes are only such in the morning and evening rush hours. I’d prefer no cycle lanes, there’d be less confusion, we all share the same road space and if you are behind a cyclist you stay behind them, same as a car.

    @John Smith: i agree with all you say John and I’ve had a number of near misses too, but its always been so. Its just that now there are more of these ‘you don’t pay road tax’ idiots, shamefully fired up by the gobsh..te Paul Williams and serial criminal George Hook and other media commentators who put all our lives, as cyclists, in danger for the sake of a few 30 cent texts. We need to challenge these people when we can, but still encourage more people to cycle, as its been shown there is safety in numbers.

    I commute 3 days per week on a very sturdy electric bike, 13 km each way. I use up 40% of the total battery capacity if I use the highest power setting. I charge up the battery overnight at very little cost.

    I started at the highest setting, worked down to standard setting, and am now about to try to “Eco” mode.

    I use a mid motor, crank driven, 20 gear bike. It has hydraulic disk brakes, excellent front suspension and fat tyres. It’s very comfortable. It is very safe.

    The bike is amazingly reliable but there is slightly more wear and tear on the drive chain than on a non power assisted bike.

    Electric takes the sting out of hills and cycling against a strong head wind but I still get a real aerobic work out.

    Try drive a car through city centre or even the M50 on a bad day and you could end up sitting in traffic for 2 hours or more..burning fuel and paying toll charges etc etc…
