Tánaiste Eamon Gilmore says full debate on Mahon report needed. Eamonn Farrell/Photocall Ireland

Gilmore: If Mahon finds corruption, it will go to DPP

Tanaiste calls for Mahon report to be debated in the the Dáil next week while stating in Leader’s Questions that corruption should be “pursued vigorously by the authorities”.

TANAISTE EAMON GILMORE said that if the Mahon report has findings of corruption that are similar to those found in previous reports, then those involved should be “pursued vigorously by the authorities”.

Speaking during Leader’s Questions in the Dáil chamber today, Gilmore said categorically that any corrupt findings will be referred to the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) and the Revenue Commissioners.

He added that he had just received the report in disc format prior to entering the chamber and that he had not yet had a chance to read it.

Gilmore called for a debate on the Mahon report next week. He said:

I think we should have a full debate next week… it is important to have a full debate on the report. I know that in the past when some reports were released there were long delays – I think think there should be no delay.

He added that the party whips should meet to discuss clearing most of next weeks business and to discuss how best to facilitate the discussion.

Socialist Party leader Joe Higgins said that the Mahon report will remind people of the “enormous greed” that plunged society into austerity while Sinn Fein’s Mary Lou McDonald said that a full debate was of “critical importance” to the public.

Sure Gilmore, another nice soundbite with no substance, this is Ireland where liars, thieves and scoundrels go unpunished and are actually rewarded.

Ah poor auld Bertie, will they not leave him alone. That man has been through the mill trying to stop his wife from getting any maintenance from him for his daughter so he had to show he had no money, that’s why he had no bank accounts.

These are all honourable decent citizens of the party that brought the country to the poorhouse door.

Oh, yeah ? Just like what you said “it’s Labour’s way or ……”. Please !! We all know that no one is “going down” as I believe that many from all political parties are up to their oxers in it. Afraid that if someone does “go down”, he/she will take as many down as well. That’s what I think. For what’s it’s worth. Sorry if I come across as cynical but I have learned to be cynical when it comes to Irish politicians.

Will that file sit in the same file in the DPP’s office as all the other investigations regarding Anglo etc??? For these type of corruption charges etc, the DPP seems to wait until the perpetrators are dead etc, before proceeding with proper investigations … yet, if someone breaks into a house belonging to a government minister, they will be in court and jail before they know whats hit them. This is the Irish justice system. Its set up t protect the elite!!!!!!!!!!

So only finding of corruption will be referred to the DPP? No finding of that nature made against Ahern. Does that mean he is in the clear?

Good job Gilmore, try get some PR so people will ignore the household charge issue in the coming weeks.

However its clear Gilmore just wants to use this PR stunt to try go after people in FF instead of going after bankers and doing any meaningful action would would benefit the average joe like…oh I don’t know perhaps stopping AIB introducing all those charges or not going ahead with the household charge.

If I see Bertie being led away in handcuffs along with his henchmen I’ll pay the household charge. If I don’t there’s no way in hell I’ll ever pay it! The C.A.B. should be called in on the lot of them. Why is this not happening?

Michael Martin defending Bertie and his horsey winnings. This man is completely devoid of shame and his moral compass is completely defunct. No wonder he was made FF leader.

If there is even an decent ounce in you Micheal, you will resign and expel Ahern, Burke and the rest of them from the party. Is there even the smallest bit of you that has a concern for this country.

“…It will go to the DPP…” and nothing more will come of it, apart from more expense to the tax payer. It’s the equivalent of charging someone who’s been burgled for the privilege of acknowledging that they were, in fact burgled!
