DublinBikes is getting four new stations around the city today

The stations are located in Smithfield and in the vicinity of the Grangegorman campus.

DUBLINBIKES, THE SYSTEM of shared short-term bike hires in the capital, has opened its newest station in Smithfield, with three more set to open later today.

The scheme is set to see a total of 15 new stations opening up around the city over the coming months.

The expansion of the scheme will increase the number of Dublinbikes stations in the city to 116, up from 101, and the number of bikes to 1,600, up from 1,500.

Dublin’s Lord Mayor Mícheál Mac Donncha today officially opened the Dublin’s newest Dublinbikes station in George’s Lane, Smithfield, Dublin 7.

In addition to George’s Lane, bikes will also be available to annual members and short-term subscribers from 3.30pm today in the vicinity of the Grangegorman campus with three stations opening around Grangegorman Lower.

These stations are located at St Brendan’s Way (South), the Clock Tower, and Ivy Avenue (North).

Once all opened, the 15 new stations will be located in the following areas:

  • George’s Lane, Smithfield
  • Grangegorman Lower (South) at St. Brendan’s Way Entrance
  • Grangegorman Lower (Central) at Clock Tower
  • Grangegorman Lower (North) at DIT Ivy Avenue Entrance
  • Rathdown Road
  • Charleville Road
  • Avondale Road
  • Western Way (Broadstone)
  • Phibsborough Road
  • Mountjoy Square East
  • North Circular Road (O’Connell’s)
  • Merrion Square South
  • Wilton Terrace (Park)
  • Killarney Street
  • Buckingham Street Lower

“The locations chosen, with their proximity to the city centre, make them ideal,” Minister for Public Expenditure Paschal Donohoe said, speaking of the opening of the new station.

“What’s more, the inclusion of three stations at Grangegorman will provide excellent alternative transport for the thousands of students attending at DIT. I commend everyone for their work in the further roll-out of the scheme,” he said.

Be great if they went out as far as Fairview. Don’t think it is in the plans though.

Meanwhile in Cork as far as I am aware they have decided not to expand the scheme.

@Charles Coughlan: The expansion is due to usage. Very popular so worth expanding in Dublin

@Charles Coughlan: Politicians in Cork are looking for expansion to suburban areas, which doesn’t really work and isn’t in place in Dublin. If they asked for expansion to sensible areas that are just next to the existing bike scheme (South Parish, Turners Cross, The Lough, Shandon) there would be more chance of getting it.

@Kal Ipers: Actually, quite paradoxically the reason given in Cork was that there was such high usage that it was costing them to ferry the bikes around and that the costs would increase significantly if increased to the suburbs. Crazy I know

@Charles Coughlan: Would that be because of the hills? Cork is very steep to cycle around, I’d imagine any station at the top of a hill would run short of bikes quickly.

@Fiona Fitzgerald: The southside is reasonably flat at least as far out as Douglas/Togher/Wilton, as is the valley of the Kiln River leading up to Blackpool. The hills might make it difficult to go up to Gurranabraher, Mayfield or Donnybrook, but there is plenty of room for expansion beyond what’s there at present.

@Mick12: As a non-Dub, the south-west of the area betwen the canals is the glaring omission on the map of Dublin Bikes. You’d think places like Meath St, Cork St, The Coombe Hospital should be on expansion plans.

@Karl Doran: The prices rarely go up for Dublin bikes and they’re already pretty good, the annual pass is a good 4x cheaper than that of London’s bike scheme.

Rubbish.. More unsafe cyclists on the road. The Dublin city council wont provide hi-vis jacket nor a helmet or dont encourage vulnerable cyclists to take the main street, with or without skills, knowledge on road safety and awareness.. NEED BIKE Licence TEST soon here for Educating the public. Shame on the council putting more ppl in danger of their lives and other road users. Atleast introduce bike insurance for accident claim.
