Eir announces plans to cut 750 jobs

In a statement, the company said it was being done “to deliver cost savings and create a leaner, more agile organisations”.

EIR HAS ANNOUNCED that 750 employees are set to go at the telecoms company.

In a statement today, it said that the employees will leave as part of voluntary redundancies but that the job losses will not impact in the rural broadband rollout.

“This has been launched in an effort to deliver costs savings and create a leaner, more agile organisation,” Eir said.

The company said that unions and the Minister for Communications are being informed of the plans.

It said that the staff members affected will be contacted with a “personal financial estimate for their consideration” but a large percentage of the company’s “field force is not eligible” for such a scheme.

General Secretary of the Communications Workers’ Union Steve Fitzpatrick said, “We have been informed by Eir that the Company intends introducing a voluntary exit scheme seeking to reduce worker numbers by 750.

We have no indication that this will be anything other than voluntary. We will engage with the company on the detail and, in particular, to ensure that proper arrangements are put in place to cover work once the scheme takes effect.

Rural commitments

Eir added that the announcement will not impact its recent commitments.

“Today’s announcement does not in any way impact on the Company’s ability to deliver on its recent contractual commitments in respect of our commercial rural rollout of Fibre to the Home to 300,000 homes and businesses.”

Earlier this week, French billionaire Xavier Niel led a consortium that purchased a majority stake in Eir for €650 million.

This coincided with the appointment of Carolan Lennon as the new chief executive officer of the company.

The company, which has a workforce of just over 3,000, has cut staff numbers in recent years.

These then leave after a few weeks or months, get SFA payment, and might have gained one or two new customers. The sales company gets its commission, Eir get new customers, and the ‘salespeople’ get a bad taste

They had been with them for a number of years and cancelled as they were moving house and when they moved they notified eir that they wished to have the service set up in the new house and they turned them down as they were a credit risk now they had always paid their bill by direct debit prior to this . What sort of company does this and when she wrote to them asking for details they never even acknowledged the letter.

@Frank Lee: I have. Ok, maybe not quite in protest, because I ‘ve had an ongoing isse with my broadband for a couple of months during which time I’ve gotten to know several of their support technicians. They seem unable – or unwilling, to fix my constant dropouts, for days at a time, then charge me for a service they’re unable to provide.
I’ve been out of contract for with them for many years and at one point they decided my modem was faulty, I could sign back up and get a new one for free. You must be kidding, sign up to a company who can’t provide a service, right. I bought it. I also clarified with 3 different customer service reps that I didn’t owe them anything? Nothing, nada, zinch, all bills paid. Great. Just send back the old modem. No, you just said I don’t owe you anything, I’ve been out of contract for years and I’m buying this it’s mine. Oh but we normally recondition them. What? Isn’t that unethical? No, problem sir, I’ll let the courier know. He didn’t.
When I decided to cancel they wanted the modem I’d just bought back, some strong language ensued. It was pointed out he had my bill on his screen and could see I’d paid for it. Either he didn’t check or was trying to steal from me. More strong language. I pointed out the facts had been established and it was reasons like for which I was leaving Eir, plus they’d had the cheek to charge me for the period for which I’d had no broadband, which had also been established. He’ll look into it, I’m not holding my breath.
It seems I have to give 30 days notice to quit even though I’m out of contract years, who knew this? Despite this Virgin are arriving tomorrow to connect me to a new super fast fibre optic… thingy.
