Pharmacist praised for saving 17-year-old tourist who suffered anaphylactic shock

The teenager and his mother were on O’Connell Street in Dublin when the teenager suffered from a severe allergy reaction.

A PHARMACIST IS being praised for saving a teenager who went into anaphylactic shock on Dublin’s O’Connell Street after eating a peanut brownie by accident.

The 17-year-old teenager’s mother came into Hickey’s Pharmacy at around 9pm on Saturday night and said her son was suffering from an allergic reaction.

The young man waited outside, as he was having trouble breathing and said he wanted fresh air. The mother and her son were American tourists.

A pharmacist brought him inside, gave him an adrenaline injection, and then called the paramedics.

A witness said that the young man had “an extremely swollen neck”, was pulling at his neck and kept saying “please don’t let me die”.

The pharmacist gave the man another adrenaline injection seven minutes later and “he started to get better”.

The paramedics arrived soon afterwards, by this time the teenager’s condition had improved.

The ambulance crew took him into the back of the ambulance and monitored his condition for a few minutes and gave him oxygen, but he didn’t go to hospital.

During the incident, which lasted for 15-20 minutes, the pharmacy was closed to customers.

A witness praised the young pharmacist for her quick response to the serious incident, saying that “most people panic and do nothing out of shock, but they’re obviously trained to act quickly”.

Speaking to TheJournal.ie, head pharmacist at Hickeys Pharmacy Group Tom Concannon said that the pharmacist had just completed her training last year.

“Pharmacists are all trained for that, and other staff are also trained – not to administer drugs – but to react by closing the store to make sure the scene was safe.”

He explained that three shots of adrenaline are usually the maximum needed in cases like these, which he said are rare, but very serious.

Anaphylactic shock is really dangerous, if he hadn’t gotten to a pharmacy or a dose of adrenalin, there’s a good change he would have died – it is life threatening.

He said that this is the eighth time an incident like this has happened in its pharmacies – so it’s still a very rare occurrence.

We’re happy when things go smoothly, of course. Pharmacists are trained for those situations – but pharmacists ultimately don’t get called into those situations every day. It was after 9pm on a Saturday.
It’s a big thing… you still have to react quickly, and [the pharmacist in this case] did very well.

He said that the woman and her son were very grateful for their help; a paramedic came into the store to say everything was fine and the teenager would be ok.

Concannon said that it was important for anyone who has a known allergy to have epipens on them at all times.

Remember in this case, the shock happened at 9pm at night, we would have been one of the only pharmacies open at that time.

You’re right Tariq. Why stop there though, let’s not allow any religion to have a place in education or public society. After all it is just daft, moronic stories like blokes going to paradise on winged horses, parting seas and all that.. It is a shame that in this day and age anyone believes this nonsense and lives their lives abiding by this nonsense, even give their lives for this nonsense, kills animals in an inhumane, barbaric way because of this nonsense, even take other people’s loves for not believing in this nonsense. Remarkable.

Give me a break, this method just gives credibility to the nonsense that they spew out and infect our children with. Can you imagine how good the education system would be if we didn’t waste our kids time with this nonsense, maybe teach them something useful like maths, physics, business.

@Stephen Murphy exactly. The teaching of religion isnt a bad thing in itself (if a broad overview of the worlds faiths) – but full scale indoctrination (brainwashing) definitely is. The Church (aided by the State) has succeeded in brainwashing generations of Irish. A Nationalist agenda curriculum, teach to the test method (instead of teaching to critically think) coupled with the Catholic dogma that Irish suffering (the most oppressed people on Earth!) is somehow necessary purgatory & Britain/Protestantism is the bogeyman has kept people in line for generations.

Con, who cares? If it wasnt for that, youd have nothing to whinge about. The “Irish” (no offence to anyone else with more than 2 brain cells) like to think of themselves as so unique, so different from everyone else in the British Isles, or “these islands” that they exist in some bubble in space/time – completely outside the history that binds said islands together. “The British” – Angles, Saxons, Jutes, Gaels, Picts, invader/settler Romans, Vikings, Normans – more invasion, rebellion than Eire – are somehow collectively homogeneous in the eyes of the Irish Nationalist and somehow guilty of disproportionate “oppression”. Cromwell? Did similar in England. Redcoats? Irish enlisted. Famine? In Dickensian era pre social welfare – not responsible Black & Tans? So what – direct response to terrorist activity. Paras? UK troops operating in the UK and actions equally condemned in the rest of the UK. The only difference between the Irish and the varied peoples of the UK are attitudes and 3/4 of a mile of sea.

But first, abandon any impure thoughts that you may have already had about this decision for they have lead you astray – listen to the one true word.

This is the word of the loud.

Gather Stephen, let us Pronounce Reality And Yearn for his enlightenment.
    All together…
We are the new way the new truth and the new light. Anyone who achieves happiness in this one true version of cosmic reality shall do so only by emulating our clinical, logical ways based on the accumulated scientific knowledge of our world – the centre of the thinking universe.
No free-thinking individual shall be allowed to put strange gods before the god of righteous indignation and enlightened logic – for this is the new word of the loud.
    Amen.

Nope it’s not. Quite simply the church has run the education system in the country for decades by providing members to the boards of management. The state abdicated responsibility. If the state wishes to take over the running of the schools they need a proper management system in place to do this and not the VEC structure they proposed where some gombeen local politician will end up as chairperson of the board

I know I wouldn’t because having these numpties on any board that promotes education is both a contradiction and gives these numpties and their religious bile credibility.

The vast majority of schools now request that applicants use a standard application form instead of CV when applying for a job. This application form only asks for academic qualifications and not primary or secondary school education. You are quoting an individual case and using it to suggest the process in tainted across the country. This is a lazy vindictive accusation. Why has it taken over 37 years for another visit to Ireland by a Pope. Has Rome any clue or even care what has been going on in Ireland and with “its flock” since 1979. Ireland has traditionally been held up as a beacon for the Catholic faith and has spent 100′s of years spreading the Christian Faith and Catholicism at home and around the world. In our greatest time of crisis and loss of faith, where has the church leadership been. 37 years is a life time and almost 2 generations and I’m afraid it may be too little, too late. There are too may young people have grown up since then and see no relevance to the church and faith in their lives. The feedback from Rome is that they are giving it ‘careful consideration ‘. What kind of nonsense reply is that. While I have huge respect for Pope Francis, he shouldn’t need an invitation. We needed that help/visit years ago and I think it’s too late. Well it certainly is for me.

I would not view it as a negative it is simply a natural evolution for a country with a high level of education (no matter how prejudiced to religion) and modern communication services.
People do not need rescuing from a lack of religious belief, it is not a negative.

The first time that the head of the Roman Catholic church had ever been to Ireland in 1979 and left a lasting impression. The fact that the Catholic church has fallen from grace through its own bad behaviour, it is now time to try and bring closure to past mistakes and move on. Personally I won’t be going to see the pope because I have little interest in being fooled a second time.

@Rachel: true Rachel. The young new upcoming catholic church is alive and growing. We as young catholics can see the faults of the old church. Instilling fear of god instead of teaching his love and Compassion. But thankfully it’s changing and I’m so happy to be part of it. I’d be list without my faith.

I remember the last time a Pope came to Ireland. We saw him in Drogheda beggibg the IRA to cease their violence, and again in Galway telling the young people of Ireland that he loves them.
I wonder what message the Pope has this time, perhaps he will tell his church followers not to be greedy and instead be more compasionate towards unbelievers and people of other faiths.

I suppose if you’ve seen one pope, you’ve seen them all.

I was within arm’s reach of one, the Polish fellow JPII, in Turku Cathedral in June 1989. I was there as an invited guest of the Lutheran Church and thought the poor old Popey looked very tired and could do with a bit of a holiday. Understandably, since it was only a day after news of the Tienanmen Square massacre had reached us.

I might go and see Frankie if both of us are still alive in two years’ time and he comes to somewhere close, like Portlaoise or Tullamore, but it would be more to study the phenomenon of groupieism than to take much notice of whatever platitudes and self-evident selective truths he shares with the starstruck multitude.

Those of you who don’t practice catholicism don’t need to worry about the Pope. Many many irish people would love to see him in Ireland. The church did alot of damage and many catholics too were hurt as a result. But the faith in God through catholicism is a personal experience and unless you’ve experienced the love of god then you couldn’t understand why people practice faith. It would be nice in today’s very “tolerant” society that all people are respected despite their beliefs.

I’d say there’ll be a great turnout with people of all ages and creeds. Look at the people that came out in their thousands to greet Pope Benedict when he visited the UK. Religion is far from dead in Ireland. I think all the anti-Catholic rhetoric will actually backfire and it’ll be a great occasion for Ireland coinciding with the World Meeting of Families. Not too bad for tourism either! I’m looking forward to it.

Why do you even feel the need to publish this? You know the majority will vote no. I am not religious but it gets tedious seeing your posts about religion over and over again. Get over it journal just get over it

Will youse imbecilic ignoramously famous for knocking truths that stare in all our faces please wake up to other discussions beyond the narrow eyesights of journo people or their views… here’s one that I came across… Yez might need to check with yer mammies, daddies, aunties, uncles, cousins, friends and others on what they say about the power of scapulas in this day and age… Have you or your family members have a scapula or two around yer necks?
    If you don’t, you’re DOOMED…
