Artist and teacher Joe Caslin: 'Men don't really talk about how we feel - unless we're really inebriated'

We spoke to Joe at The Response Series Exhibition for Darkness into Light 2018.

ARTIST JOE CASLIN’S images – often placed on the side of buildings – have been provoking debate and discussion in recent years. His work first gained national prominence during the 2015 same-sex marriage debate.

His latest artwork is being displayed on the side of an office block at RTÉ as part of the broadcaster’s ‘Big Picture’ youth mental health project.

We spoke to him at an exhibition of artworks, inspired by the annual Pieta House ‘Darkness Into Light’ walk, that tackles mental health issues through different installations and art pieces.

Caslin, who works full time as a secondary school teacher, said that stigma – particularly among young men – is often the biggest barrier preventing people from seeking help for mental health problems.

A Flemish pm wouldn’t last a day if he couldn’t speak French… Sad state of affairs. Not sure how long it will last. His budget has been slammed by every newspaper, Flemish and Walloon.

And who is Leterme to take pot shots at Di Rupo…. He sang the French national anthem when asked to sing the Belgian one at the national day celebrations…seriously!

A bit of info for you: very few Flemish know the Belgian anthem. And it’s a matter of pride. I learned the Flemish anthem in school, not the other one. Actually the only version I know is one about a constipated donkey. At Least Leterme could apologise in the 3 national languages. I don’t see Di Rupo do that! In all fairness now!

Whatever about that… I will celebrate Belgium’s new government by having chips for my dinner.
