Cars sold in Ireland included in recall of 312,000 BMW vehicles

The affected models are BMW 1 Series, 3 Series, Z4 and X1 petrol and diesel models made between March 2007 and August 2011.

CARS SOLD IN Ireland will be included in a recall of 312,000 BMW vehicles.

The recall of cars made between 2007 and 2011 follows a BBC investigation which found that cars could cut out completely as they are being driven due to electrical faults.

It is not known how many cars sold in Ireland will be included in the recall, but those affected will be notified in the next three weeks.

The affected models are BMW 1 Series, 3 Series, Z4 and X1 petrol and diesel models made between March 2007 and August 2011.

BMW withdrew 36,410 petrol cars last year because of safety issues, but that has now been extended following the Watchdog investigation.

The company initially recalled cars in the UK after Narayan Gurung, who was travelling with his wife on Christmas Day in 2016, died when their Ford Fiesta crashed into a tree to avoid a broken-down BMW in Guildford, Surrey.

BBC News reports that Watchdog has found that the fault could affect a wider number of cars.

The Watchdog programme is being broadcast tonight on BBC 1 at 8pm.

@Derek Richardson: The NCT doesn’t delve into every aspect of a veichle like the electrics. Even tho I hate paying for it myself , it has improved road safety significantly. Even if just down to bald tyres.

@Blind Faith: BMW like the HSE, will deny, deny, deny until forced to come clean on the steps of the court. The “ultimate driving machine” has had many faults over the years, some major and expensive to fix. What amazes is that even minor production faults are not rectified for years after they have been brought to light. The infamous N47 engine timing chain problem was identified in 2009 but continued in production for years afterwards, with those cars being sold today on BMW main dealer forecourts.
    Stay clear.

BMW knew about this issue for years, it is disgusting that someone had to die before they decided to do anything about it.

They issued a recall for this very issue in the US & Canada in 2013. http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-2279953/BMW-forced-recall-500-000-cars-faulty-cable-causes-engines-stall.html

People have been reporting this safety issue to BMW for years here but they chose not to address it: https://www.boards.ie/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=2056912596

My car suffered a cable burnout and power failure, was basically told to F-off by both BMW Ireland and a main dealer garage as car was out of warranty and they refused to accept that it was a safety issue.

If my reading is correct BMW knew of a dangerous fault and did nothing to fix it until the BBC proved that BMW were at fault….. so we have faulty BMWs on Irish roads that could stall unexpectedly… as and from dawn tomorrow all these cars should be banned from the roads until fixed – I guess I will not want to be behind a BMW on the M50 at 100 km/h…

Seriously though there should be some action as it seems BMW knew of a fault and hoped it would go away before it proved fatal…

I bought a 320i coupe when I was 26 for 4.5k. Car new was circa 35k new and car was 9 years old. Sold it 2 years later for 1k having took weeks to sell. Micra, yaris’, etc kept their value. I appreciate it was a petrol though but still mercs and audis and Volkswagens of similar genres kept their values much better

Not just BMW – happened to me in a new Hyundai i40 2012 – after the first service intermittently lost power while driving – nothing on computer log and didn’t happen when garage tested it – terrifying – got rid of it. Re BMW notice that they rarely use indicators- used to think it was down to the famous attitude of BMW drivers – thinking now could be shoddy workmanship.
