@Cranky: I have been saying remarkably similar things for years…and it only got worse.

Now we have a situation where paying a woman who offers to sell you sex is criminal, but driving a woman to sell sex by leaving her in any one of many impossible and desperate situations tend to result in regular promotions and a fat juicy pension. You only have to retire if somebody actually dies.

The majority of sex workers live on a different planet to the privileged few taking it upon themselves to ignore and silence them while they dictate their lives to destruction.

It’s always so funny to me when men try pull that card, as though by ensuring women remain prostituted you’re doing some kind of feminist act. Humanitarian. Pathetic.

@Veronica: maybe you should talk to some sex workers instead of being so judgemental of them. Equating them all to trafficked workers undermines their integrity as human beings capable of making their own choices. Should we ban the textile industry and judge all textile workers as exploited because some work in poor conditions for poor pay or are essentially slave labour. The world isn’t black and white and your attitude to sex workers isn’t only pathetic, it endangers them.

@Veronica: When women have no option but sell sex they generally need the money far more than the clients need the sex. They certainly do not need their income sacrificed to your gratification.

@Siobhán Ni Mhurchú: how many women with options do you think are “choosing” to be prostituted. None of my colleagues when I was doing my doctorate chose to go into prostitution after. Women I know from other areas of my life had no options and ended up being prostituted, but they got out and now campaign very strongly to abolish prostitution and the capitalist-sanctioned wholesale of women and children.

@Veronica: I know 2 girls who chose to register themselves on one of those websiteswhere they date older men to help pay their way through college. They both took money for sex and enjoyed the cash and lifestyle they were able to afford so much that they now CHOOSE to be paid escorts and they enjoy their jobs. STOP suggesting all women that are paid to have sex are there involuntary as it’s just not true. Many women chose to be there.

Plenty…and that is why abolitionisim is so utterly evil because it knowingly, and deliberately lobbies to take away the only survival option so many women have, slow strangulation is a good analogy.

They could only find 2098 people worldwide to sign a letter to Justin Trudeau asking him to support abolition, and they had to include “allies and others” along with the “prostituted survivors” to get anything like that many. Meanwhile there are an estimated 40 million women worldwide selling sex to stay alive, feed their children and maintain some kind of quality of life without hurting anyone, against all odds. Unless you want to make their only means of survival easier and safer they would very much like you to go away and save the whales.

In all seriousness, the years that I sold sex showed me a much more respectful side of men than I had ever seen outside sex work.

In bars and nightclubs all I ever saw were predators looking to put a notch on the bedpost who would tell you literally anything to get sex without any material or emotional investment, as a sex worker I found myself dealing with human beings, like me, who were male. The biggest problem were the ones who became too attached.

The predatory users made up about 2% of clients, were universally avoided like plague, and tended to meet their needs by finding ways to get sex without paying us (one guy spent years convincing every new sex worker, in turn, that he was a high ranking and exceptionally liberal, Guard…he was charming, presentable, highly intelligent – and a cosmetic sales rep.)
