EGYPTIAN PRESIDENT ABDEL Fattah al-Sisi has taken the rare decision to open the Rafah border crossing with Gaza for the entire holy month of Ramadan after Israel killed some 60 Palestinian protesters in the enclave this week.
The decision was made “to alleviate the suffering” of residents in the Palestinian territory, Sisi said on Facebook late last night.
The Rafah crossing is the Gaza Strip’s only gateway to the outside world not controlled by Israel, but Egypt has largely sealed it in recent years, citing security threats.
The last extended opening lasted three weeks in 2013. Usually Palestinians are able to cross for a few dozen days a year.
Previous openings of the crossing have been cut short by violence in the Sinai peninsula, or with authorities giving other reasons.
Sisi’s announcement came after some 60 Palestinians were killed by Israeli fire on Gaza’s frontier on Monday, with Egypt’s foreign ministry describing the victims as “martyrs”.
At least 114 Gazans have been killed in border protests and clashes since March 30, prior to the controversial opening Monday of the US embassy in Jerusalem after Washington recognised the disputed city as capital of Israel.
The UN’s human rights chief today slammed Israel’s response to protests along the Gaza border fence as “wholly disproportionate”.
Zeid Ra’ad Al Hussein warned that “killing resulting from the unlawful use of force by an occupying power may also constitute wilful killings, a grave breach of the Fourth Geneva Convention”.
Egypt has relations with both Israel and Gaza’s rulers Hamas, giving Cairo an instrumental role in mediating between the two sides and alleviating pressure on the territory’s two million residents.
Hamas leader Ismail Haniya on Sunday briefly visited Egypt, where he met with the director of the country’s intelligence services, Abbas Kamel.
‘Strong message’
The crossing at Rafah is open until the end of Ramadan in mid-June for sick and elderly Palestinians, as well as students enrolled in foreign universities or those who have family in Egypt, border officials said.
For more than a decade, Israel has imposed a crippling blockade on Gaza, arguing it is necessary to isolate Hamas, with which it has fought three wars since 2008.
But critics say that amounts to collective punishment of the enclave’s residents, 47 percent of whom suffer from food insecurity, according to the United Nations.
Turkey was preparing to host an emergency summit of the world’s main pan-Islamic body, the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation, in Istanbul.
Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, who has clashed with Israeli leaders over the Gaza killings, has vowed the extraordinary meeting will send a “strong message to the world” over Israel’s treatment of the Palestinians.
At an Israeli checkpoint early today, Palestinians were crossing from the West Bank town of Bethlehem to the first weekly prayers of Ramadan at Jerusalem’s Al-Aqsa mosque compound.
Palestinians were checked with metal detectors and had their bags searched by Israeli forces, while at least two men in wheelchairs were pushed through the checkpoint by border agents.

Let’s remember that Israel came Into being as a state through the use of terrorism against the British authorities who were supposed to be governing Palestine as a protectorate since WW1. Under Zionist pressure and bombs the British gave away the country they were supposed to by protecting, encouraged by western guilt over the failure to assist Jews during the war and of course lobbying. Hamas has only one objective, that is the extermination of the Jewish population of Israel. For this reason Hamas is listed as a terrorist organisation by almost every country in the world. Since Hamas rules Gaza, and Hamas is a terrorist organistion, then Gaza is a terrorist state.Is that simple enough for you?

Again you’re spouting complete lies. Palestinians in Israel have full voting rights and it’s one of the only places in the Middle East where muslim women can vote. Palestinians have seats in the Knesset and have many Government positions. They have held seats on the Israeli Supreme Court. The only distinction is that Palestinians are not required to serve in the army. Many choose to, but it’s not required. The Gaza Strip is about 25 miles long and three to seven miles wide at different points – Approximately 360 km², and they have nearly 2 Million people crammed into it –
Israel on the other hand is 270 miles long and 85 miles or 20,770 km² for a population of 8.4 Million.
Gaza also has no sea border whatsoever

No peace settlement is ever going to be reached as long as Hamas is intent on Israel’s destruction and the people of Gaza are never going to have a chance of a decent life as long as Hamas continues to use Gaza as a terror factory and its people as cannon fodder.

The breathtaking stupidity of the Gazans may be appreciated by how very well Hamas actually assists Israel in the destruction of Hamas by its own protests. Israel has a simple four word rule: “approach Border – get shot.” Anyone who stupidly chooses to approach the Border also stupidly chooses, by that stupid act, to be shot: cause = effect; stupid is as stupid does.
The constant orders by Hamas for Gazans to approach the Border ironically actually are helping Israel against Hamas because those stupid Gazans who choose to approach the Border are injured or killed and, therefore, are eliminated, not only as a possible present threat to Israel, but also eliminated as a possible future threat to Israel. Because they will continue to be eliminated as a present and future threat for as long as the protests continue, the continuation of the protests by Hamas will continue to help Israel reduce future threats since Hamas is slaughtering the ranks of its own alleged “army” by its pathetic protests. Israel does not have to check papers or computer information to determine the present and future threat potential of those Gazans who approach the Border. Israel only has to see which suicidal idiots approach the Border to know their present and future threat potential.
Stupid is as stupid does, and stupid is Hamas and Gaza for a “Baker’s Dozen” reasons: (1) actually creating for Israel this Darwinian “Natural Selection” of the elimination of present and future Gazan terrorists by Hamas ordering the “Natural Selection” of where Gazans should walk, which enables Israel to eliminate them as future threats; (2) not one Israeli soldier has sustained even one small, shallow paper cut as a result of the protests; (3) in contrast, over 100 deaths and thousands of injuries to Gazans; (4) those few protesters who actually penetrate the Border (and always only a few meters) are either shot or caught or both, which completely destroys Hamas’ alleged great “March of Return” as it truly is a “March of Turn Around” in Gaza; (5) the protests have not changed the daily lives of Gazans in any way whatsoever; (6) the protests had no effect on the May 14 opening of the American Embassy in Jerusalem to which no less than 32 countries accepted an invitation to attend; (7) the protests will have no effect on the recent opening of the Guatemala Embassy and next week’s opening of the Paraguay Embassy in Jerusalem; (8) the protests will have no effect on many other future Embassies in Jerusalem; (9) the protests had no effect on the lives of the people of Israel; (10) the protests attest to the completely destructive governance of Gaza by Hamas since it took power in 2006; (11) the protests corroborate the utterly failed policies and promises of Hamas to Gazans since Hamas was established in 1986; (12) the protests prove the terrible stupidity of the people of Gaza to follow Hamas; and (13) finally, there never ever shall be a “Return,” no matter how many suicide bombings, car rammings, Ambassador withdrawals, stabbings, kite bombs, BDS boycotts, tunnel attacks, protests, rockets, bad media attention, drive by shootings, kidnappings, no matter how many anything – – there never ever shall be a “Return.”
