In a system where administrators outnumber clinicians by 2 or 3 to 1 this shouldn’t be allowed to happen. Who checks out the bona fides of potential employees. It’s becoming a regular occurrence now, this sort of shite, and no one but the “doctor” is held to account.

Is this the same doctor in UHG who mistook an elbow x-ray for an ankle x-ray?then their was your man in Mullingar hospital who could not perform basic first aid tasks like CPR.Week after week millions is paid out for medical malpractice and nobody from the HSE is held responsible for employing these clowns and chancers.

This is what happens when jobs are so unattractive that there are no qualified applicants for hundreds of consultant jobs in Ireland. The hospital administration wants to fill a post – they will hire the 1 applicant who meets the minimum standards for the position.
In the past, there would be 5-10 Irish applicants for every consultant job. Doctors who had completed their training in the top hospitals in the US, UK, Europe would be fighting to come home. Doctors with great CVs, great experience. Now these doctors look at the jobs in Ireland, look at the dysfunctional system – and say no – I’ll stay in New York, I’ll stay in London, I’ll stay in Sydney.
People complain about how much some doctors make. However if I have someone operating on my spine – I want someone who is well paid. I don’t want the cheapest option. A bargain basement approach to medical care ultimately is more expensive – in monetary and human terms.

The deeper issue here is not about the quality of foreign doctors we are employing. It is about the failure of the Irish University System to train enough Irish doctors to meet demand. We give up Irish University places to applicants from outside the EU because they pay a fortune. Then the Irish and Irish trained doctors go to Australia where they are well paid, and we are left to recruit the graduates from Transdeneister Community College of surgery and bicycle repair.

@Virtual Donal: it’s not about training more Irish doctors – we train plenty. They just don’t want to work in a dysfunctional system. Irish doctors who complete their speciality training abroad don’t want to come back to work in a terrible system, to earn less money, without sufficient resources to properly care for patients.

I recently watched two guys, complete with mini digger replacing about 20 small paving bricks outside a hospital main entrance…….it took them a week to complete the job.It must be like winning the Lotto if you “win” a contract from the HSE.

You wait two years to see a consultant then you can’t trust his diagnosis…. nice to see our hard earned tax dollars at work!! Absolute bloody ridiculous.

It doesn’t say consultant – it says surgeon. A surgeon can be a registrar, staff grade surgeon or specialist registrar, as well as consultant grade. (Just for info! Let’s not jump to conclusions)

My comment is partly due to how my 6yr old son was left swinging for two years by UHG while he needed surgery to correct his hearing.
My point still stands…. you wait years to see a consultant or a surgeon for treatment then he/she makes a balls of it! It’s happening far too often. Only a few weeks ago there was a consultant or a radiologist that couldn’t tell the difference between an X-ray of the knee & elbow! There was the doctor who didn’t know how to perform CRP…. the list is endless!!

Why are the people who hire these guys, never set an exam for them and don’t appear to check their qualifications never held to account?
