'Inspiring and funny': Tributes paid to teenage boys who drowned in Clare quarry

The teenage boys got into difficulty in Knockanean, Ennis yesterday afternoon.

Updated 4.55pm

TWO TEENAGERS WHO drowned in a Clare quarry yesterday have been named locally as Jack Kenneally and Shay Moloney.

The boys were swimming with a group of friends when they got into difficulty at the disused quarry in Knockanean in Ennis at around 3.30pm yesterday.

It’s understood that one of the boys got into difficulty and the other tried to assist him.

Emergency services were called to the scene and reportedly searched for 40 minutes before finding them.

The teenagers were recovered from the water and taken to University Hospital Limerick but were later pronounced dead.

Both Jack and Shay were both from Ennis. The boys both played rugby with Ennis Rugby Club, which has released a statement paying tribute to them.

Tributes

Richard Murphy, President of Ennis RFC, said: “Shay and Jack were the heartbeat of our successful u15 squad. They were the guys that lead from the front, the guys that carried the fight, the guys that made the difference.

“As well as developing into exciting rugby players, both Jack and Shay were developing into fine young men who were a credit to their family and friends.

As resolute and fearless as they were on the pitch, they were as funny, engaging and inspiring off the pitch. Our club was a better place for having them as part of it and their absence will be keenly felt.

“We would like to acknowledge and thank the support of the broader rugby family at home and abroad in this difficult time.

“We would also like to acknowledge and thank the support of individuals and sports clubs across Ireland who have contacted us with their condolences and sympathies. Words and sentiments matter at times like this and it is all greatly appreciated.

“Our thoughts and actions are now completely focused on supporting the Moloney and Kenneally families over the coming days and weeks.”

The Principal of Ennis Community College, where Jack was a second year student, also released a statement saying the school is deeply saddened by his death.

This is a terrible tragedy for the Kenneally family, our school and our community.

It added: “Jack will be greatly missed by his fellow students and teachers”.

The school has implemented a critical incident management plan and psychologists from the National Educational Psychological Service (NEPS) and Limerick and Clare Education and Training Board (LCETB) are supporting and advising teachers on how to support students dealing with this loss.

Speaking on Morning Ireland on RTÉ Radio 1 earlier, Deputy Mayor of Ennis Ann Norton said people in the community are shocked by the tragic deaths.

I think everybody in Ennis, and I’d say across the country, is in shock that two 15-year-olds have actually lost their lives.

She added that “it was just devastating to read” posts being left by young people on social media about the tragedy.

“The message that Manning’s sentence, the longest in U.S. history for the leaking of classified information to the press, sends to the rest of the world is disturbing. It says to the mothers and fathers who have lost children in drone strikes and air attacks, to the families grieving over innocent relatives killed by U.S. forces, that their suffering means nothing to us. It says we will continue to murder and to wage imperial wars that consume hundreds of thousands of civilian lives with no accountability. And it says that as a country we despise those within our midst who have the moral courage to make such crimes public.

There are strict rules now in our American penal colony. If we remain supine, if we permit ourselves to be passively stripped of all political power and voice, if we refuse to resist as we are incrementally reduced to poverty and the natural world is senselessly exploited and destroyed by corporate oligarchs, we will have the dubious freedom to wander among the ruins of the empire, to be diverted by tawdry spectacles and to consume the crass products marketed to us. But if we speak up, if we name what is being done to us and done in our name to others, we will become, like Manning, Julian Assange and Snowden, prey for the vast security and surveillance apparatus. And we will, if we effectively resist, go to prison or be forced to flee.”

Julian Assange Not Charged With Anything

Contrary to mainstream media fake news, Julian Assange has never been charged with any sexual offence. His status was that he was wanted for questioning. But the questioning by Swedish police and prosecutors took place exactly two months ago in the Ecuadorean Embassy, at length over several days. So he is no longer wanted for questioning, yet is still not charged. The pretence there is any kind of genuine criminal investigation in progress, already transparently thin, is now in shreds. https://goo.gl/72fU3K

“Not exactly a pardon though is it?”

    Well, what did you expect?!

Manning put lives in danger by putting sensitive military information into the public arena. It is likely that innocent people have been killed because of what Manning did, i.e. local people who co-operated with the US and its allies.

As for the “Collateral Murder” video, the Apache helicopter crew honestly believed that the people on the ground were insurgents. Mistakes happen in what Clausewitz referred to as “the fog of war”.

By the way, Manning is still a man. After all, he still has his penis.

You are one of the most odious posters on this website. Your incessant apologism of US militarism and criminality is despicable and yet you have the nerve to lecture Russia and others on human rights when you’re constantly trying to rationalise the innumerable cases of human rights violations from the US.

Chelsea Manning like Snowden is a hero and will be remembered as such by decent people. She has received the support from other heroes like Daniel Ellsberg and Thomas Drake who have stood up to the US governments for its human rights abuses.

There is no evidence that the information Manning released ever led to the harm of any individuals as a US general conceded at Manning’s hearing. Furthermore the people who endangered the lives of US soldiers were the men who launched the illegal war on Iraq in the first place. To pin the blame on the whistleblower who showed a conscience and aimed to expose the appalling acts that were committed is beneath contempt.

It gratifies me just how much embarrassment Wikileaks has caused the US government, and I hope a lot more is to come. Until there is accountability for the US’ actions around the world, Wikileaks and whistleblowing is a vital necessity.

Also, it goes without saying that your transphobia is pathetic. But it’s characteristic of your type.

For an extradition to take place, an extradition request has to be made. This request requires a charge, a legal charge, and it has to be approved by a judge in the country who has custody.

There is no request or charge, so the ball is in the US court….they now have to decide whether they want to politically persecute a journalist…..

If this is a witch hunt, and his human rights and civil rights are broken, it will be proof of the corruption within the USA. With worldwide confidence in the credibility of our political leaders and institutions this would only make things worse.

The best course of action for them to take now, is to stop persecuting the messengers, and get their house in order, address the issues raised by whistleblowers, and hold people to account.

Otherwise they will find themselves voted out of power, and have the revulsion of the world worse than it already is…

    @The Bob:
UN have found twice that Assange should be free to leave the embassy, as there is no case to answer. Assange has agreed multiple times to answer Swedish police questions from the embassy in London, but the game is to get him to Sweden so he can be extradited to the US. The woman in the alleged sexual assault case has gone on record at the UN saying she was ‘railroaded’ by police into the allegations. What he’s actually accused of is having sexual intercourse without a condom, but it was consensual. The woman even lent him train fare the next day as his bank card wasn’t working, hardly the actions of a rape victim. These are trumped up charges to get him to Sweden as there is an extradition treaty between the US & Sweden. Wikileaks has a 100% verifiable record with it’s releases over its 10+ yr history, that’s 100%…like hundreds of thousands of releases & 100% truth…unlike corporate owned media, but then Bob you probably swallow anything you read. As per propaganda usual this article fails to mention the fact war crimes were revealed by Bradley/Chelsea Manning, like torture at Abu Ghraib & the infamous collateral murder video showing the callous murder of unarmed civilians(incl. 2 journalists), but the ‘journalists’ for this article choose to omit all these relevant details. check out the video for yourself Bob & then decide who the bad guys are (type ‘collateral murder’ into youtube), always question the source.

Also it was not legal under the Patriot act to have mass surveillance of American citizens, also it is not legal to break all constitutional limits on invasion of privacy by gov.

They knew it was illegal, that is why they kept it secret.

And hat is why whistleblowers are so important, and are in fact brave heros.

Again, i hope you understand that I’m not actually arguing with you. I’m just pointing out the stated position and mindset of those that seek to prosecute Snowden. Snowden and Manning are heroes in my eyes. The Patriot Act was able to be interpreted in a way that allowed for mass surveillance. Yes, unconstitutional but not struck down by the courts at the time

There is an outstanding European Arrest Warrant for him to be extradited to Sweden for questioning. There is no extradition request in the UK for him to be sent to the USA. If he was genuine he would now go to Sweden for his interviews. He says that the USA will then request his extradition from Sweden. If it does, he can now go. If it doesn’t, we might begin to think that he is a fantasist and narcissist.

    @Patrick Brompton:

An arrest warrant without any charges against him, this has been questioned by the UN as being wrong, and would not be tolerated in any other circumstance, he is a victim of political manipulations, and effectively a political prisoner in the west.

If sweden were genuine they would conduct their interviews in the embassy, or would give guarantees that it is not a ploy to allow for extradition to the states.

He has every right to be suspicious, the US has proven to show no regard to international laws, or human rights over the last decade.

drone strikes, extraordinary renditions, invasions, created civil wars, invented evidence, guantanamo etc etc etc

Assange keeps hinting he is willing to let himself be extradited to the US and not with Manning having his sentence commuted he has no excuse not to return to Sweden to face his charges there (if he is as innocent as his supporters claim).

Padraig. The European Arrest Warrant is still active as is the extradition request from Sweden. The US on the other hand have laid no charges against Assange nor have they made any extradition request for him from any country. Now if it was the case that Sweden no longer wanted Assange back in Sweden he then would have no valid excuse to remain in the Ecuadorian Embassy. Let us not forget he was free on Bail in the UK for one year prior to him jumping Bail and hiding in the Embassy. And in all that time the US made zero effort to have him extradited.

@Pádraig Ó Raghaill: Then why if the Warrant is no longer valid is Assange still seeking refuge from it? Can you answer that. He is not wanted by US authorities and to keep repeating his paranoid accusation that the US is just waiting for him to leave the Embassy so they can get him just doesn’t fly. The fact is he is still wanted by the UK court for jumping bail and by the Swedish Authorities. The US has not indicted him on any charge nor has request any country extradite him.

    @Mick

Because he is obviously being politically persecuted, it stinks to high heaven.

Why is it you think the UL has spent millions keeping armed police presence in front of the embassy for years? For a allegation in Sweden that had no charge, and they only wish to question him? That is how the UK behaves when someone is wanted for questions…..of course not.

Also Sweden refuse to agree to simple conditions…why? Both the UK and Sweden are refusing to follow a UN judgement against them, that they are illegally detaining him.

All for a no charge allegation in Sweden ? Are you stupid?

They want to get him to their US masters who have ordered them to extradite him. The bloodthirsty Obama admin wanted to make an example….so no one else would dare tell the truth against their interests again.

What utter rubbish. He is a paranoid narcissist. The reason the UK has Police watching the Embassy is simple. He is a Bail jumper and they know exactly where he is. Or maybe you believe he is above the law.
