Palestinians hurl stones and burn tires near the fence of the Gaza Strip's border with Israel, during a protest east of Khan Younis, in the Gaza Strip. Adel Hana/AP

Four Gazans killed by Israeli fire on border

Among the dead was 15-year-old Haitham al-Jamal.

FOUR PALESTINIANS WERE killed by Israeli fire on the Gaza border today, the territory’s health ministry said giving a new toll, as weeks of deadly clashes with protesters continued.

Among the dead was 15-year-old Haitham al-Jamal, who was shot on the border in southern Gaza east of the city of Khan Yunis, the ministry said. It earlier reported three deaths.

It said more than 100 Palestinians were also wounded by gunfire, including an AFP photographer, Mohammed Abed al-Baba, who was shot in the leg.

Baba, who has worked for AFP in Gaza since 2000, said he was shot in the leg while wearing a clearly identified press vest and helmet around 200 metres from the border east of Jabalia in northern Gaza.

Around 10,000 Palestinians gathered in five places along the border, the Israeli army said, with clashes ensuing.

The army said in a statement its forces were using “riot dispersal means and are operating in accordance with the rules of engagement.”

At least 129 Palestinians have been killed by Israeli fire since protests broke out along the Gaza border on March 30. There have been no Israeli casualties.

Protests peaked on May 14 when at least 61 Palestinians were killed in protests to coincide with the controversial opening of the US embassy in Jerusalem.

Before today protests the Israeli military had warned of another day of mass bloodshed, saying Hamas was encouraging people to seek to breach the fence again.

But numbers were lower than some predictions and protesters mostly didn’t approach the border fence, AFP correspondents said.

Israel says Gaza’s Islamist rulers Hamas are using the protests as an excuse to carry out attacks.

The Jewish state maintains a crippling blockade of Gaza it says is necessary to isolate Hamas.

Critics say it amount to collective punishment of the territory’s two million residents.

@Newto2016: it’s terrible children often have runny nose as sign of COVID they will come into schools and spread it to everyone by sneezing on everyone. It’s not good enough especially as high risk children and teachers are being told they must attend school. Someone’s child with a runny nose will kill someone

@Ted Logan: I’ve reminded my son that if he tries to use fake Covid symptoms as a way of getting off school, he will still have to be tested and have a supersized cotton bud shoved up his nose into the back of his head, so best not to even think about trying it. That seems to have worked.

In all seriousness, it will be interesting how we all cope with normal winter illneses….no one in our family has been sick since March, but today my spouse and I are feeling a bit run down and headachy and of course it is hard not to think the worst LOL.

Most people have not been exposed to many germs since March so I would imagine we will feel worse with those first colds and sore throats having not been used to it for awhile!

Our children are to be used as Guinea pigs. Send them back as the first group gatherings and see what happens to them. If covid is to kick off again in the cold season, our little people will have the most exposure.

Surely parents who are concerned if their child is unwell should contact their GP for a check up, as they have always done. They will be assured of a professional diagnosis and the GP will have the family’s history on file.
