Status Orange wind warning issued for 5 counties as Storm Hector blows in

A lesser Status Yellow warning has also been issued for six other counties.

A STATUS ORANGE wind warning has been issued for five counties for tonight, with gusts of up to 125 km/hr expected.

According to Met Éireann, counties Donegal, Galway, Mayo and Sligo will be covered by the warning, which comes into effect this evening at 9pm and lasts until 10am tomorrow.

The winds are associated with the incoming Storm Hector, with mean speeds of 65 to 80 km/hr with gusts of 110 to 125 km/hr. The winds will be strongest in coastal areas.

A lesser Status Yellow warning has also been issued for counties Cavan, Monaghan, Leitrim, Roscommon, Clare and Kerry.

In those areas winds are expected to reach mean speeds of 55 to 65 km/hr with gusts of up 90 to 110 km/hr.

In general, the weather is set to remain cloudy this afternoon and become more unsettled as the day progresses.

More severe wet and windy weather will hit most areas this evening.

Tomorrow will start very windy in the areas affected by the warnings, with a mix of sunny spells and scattered showers across the country.

    @thomas patrick: blocking high returns mid nxt week . These are same blocking we saw @ winter very hard for it to be broken completely & they can slip away slightly to allow Atlantic but these high pressures re build & airflow will originate from Azores . Bringing in mid high 20s

    Fabulous few days of sunshine, looked like the entire country was making the most of it, if we had it all the time we’d moan about that too, great start to the summer, hopefully there are plenty more long warm sunny days in store for us!…

    3 weeks of continuous heat and when the weather changes, as it tends to do so in this country, we get the moaners…we’re in the Atlantic. Take the sunshine when we get it,enjoy it and move on.

    I wouldn’t risk it. I’ve never seen so many socks blowing past as it is. If this wind keeps up, people washing their clothes in Donegal will be donating them to the west coast and beyond. Americans will be delighted with all the free Aran jumpers at this rate.
