THE FATAL SHOOTING of three men in Malmo, Sweden’s third largest city, was the latest incident in suburban feuds between criminal gangs fighting over territory or honour.
Sweden’s justice minister called the shootings an “abominable crime”.
Police in Malmo said today that three of the men — aged 19, 27 and 29 — had died overnight. None of the victims were identified, in line with Swedish practice.
Three others — aged 21, 30 and 32 — had been injured — one seriously, Region Skane, the regional health authority for southern Sweden, said.
“It is an abominable crime and reminds us once again that our main task is to fight organised crime,” Sweden’s Justice Minister Morgan Johansson told Swedish news agency TT.
Malmo police chief Stefan Sinteus told a news conference that the shooting likely was linked to feuding criminal gangs that are fighting over territory and honour, conflicts which have become more common in major Swedish cities in recent years.
In Malmo alone, there are three or four gang feuds, Sinteus said.
“Those involved are to be considered as gang members who are involved in serious organised crime,” Sinteus said. “It is unusual that three die in the same incident.”
“We didn’t see it coming,” he added.
Sinteus said there was no motive for last night’s shooting “but generally speaking” a feud could start over business conflicts, girls or a perceived lack of respect by others.
The men were shot as they left an internet cafe in the southeastern part of the southern Swedish city yesterday evening. Police could not confirm media reports that the shots had been fired from a car and that an automatic weapon had been used.
Police said a dozen shots were fired but no arrests have been made and they are looking for a dark vehicle.
The shots caused screaming among bystanders but police quickly said there was no reason for the public to worry.

Now if the Swedish authorities would actually collect statistics on nationality of perpetrators, they might be able to use that information in finding solutions. But they don’t. So they have blood on their hands.
Facts do matter. It just people like you and the Swedish authorities are afraid of what they might say…

72% of gang members are first or second generation immigrants. These immigrants have been giving education opportunities, housing, some of the best welfare in the world. And they have failed to integrate. Now they argue that labour market opportunities are an issue as 16% of these people are unemployed.
I’ll give another view. These people are criminals. They have turned their back on their generous hosts. They should be stripped of citizenship , if they have it, and deported.

It’s silly to believe that a country like Sweden can absorb as many refugees and migrants from war zones and failed states as it has done without a significant impact on crime, stability and the general culture of the country. Moderate, well-regulated immigration over time makes sense, mass unregulated immigration over a short period of time is a recipe for utter disaster.

@Dave O Keeffe: I strongly doubt Malmo has absorbed this level of immigration during that period? Social issues are to be expected after taking so many migrants, but to this magnitude?
@Daniel Donovan: it really has, Croats, Bosnians and Serbs started moving there about 50 years ago. I know it’s one person but a good example is Zlatan Ibrahimovic, his parents (both from different countries) met in Malmö four years before his birth, he was born and raised there in a migrant community I think he was born in 1981.
Could not care less what happens in Sweden now. They deserve everything they get but I do hope other countries look at it and stop immigration immediately.

But I am saying if there is evidence that suggests open border immigration from these places results in rises in crime and terrorism, well then we have to change our stance on open border ideas. I’m all for controlled immigration. Genuine refugees and merit based immigration…That’s not an unreasonable view. I’d also support immediate deportation for immigrants who take part in crime.

Too many folk smear people as ‘far right’ if they simply argue for controlled immigration. Surely it is prudent for a country to choose the best immigrants and keep out the headcases and criminals which invariably come with a lax system.

@TheJeff: There is no such thing as European Culture. Are you suggesting that someone from the Arran Islands and someone from Stockholm have the same culture? or even someone from Berlin and someone from Paris? Do you even know what culture means? Does the fact that Celtic culture was spread all over Europe at one point mean all Europeans were Celts?

@Walt Jabsco: Within the EU there is an agreed code and legislation because we spent 40+ years hammering them out but that in no way constitutes a culture. In fact even in this small island we have several different cultures, Catholic, Protestant, Traveler, Planter, various islanders, and that is without taking into account the many sub cultures of each of those.The idea that any country or people have some kind of homogeneous culture based identity, is wildly inaccurate.
