Beaumont Hospital asks public to stay away amid latest virus outbreak

The number of people at the hospital affected by the winter vomiting bug has now reached 300.

FRIENDS AND RELATIVES of patients at Beaumont Hospital have been asked to stay away as the institution battles an outbreak of the winter vomiting bug.

Some 300 people at the north Dublin hospital have now come down with norovirus infection, with 60 staff and 240 patients among those affected since the outbreak began almost a month ago.

Children have been banned from visiting the hospital entirely and a limit of one visitor per patient is being applied.

Hospital authorities believe the peak of the outbreak has now passed but visitors are still being asked to stay away over the Easter weekend, a spokesperson said.

It is entirely understandable that people may be keen to visit a close friend or relative in the hospital over the Easter holiday. Unfortunately, while the peak of the outbreak does now appear to have passed, visitor restrictions are still necessary.

The spokesperson also thanked the public for their co-operation. “Most people have have heeded our pleas to avoid all unnecessary visits to wards,” the official said.

The hospital issued a previous appeal along similar lines three weeks ago.

its amazing how many people simply ignore the signs and announcements and walk straight past the antiseptic handwash at the entrance to Beamount. It’s a simple thing that can reduce the spread of some of these viruses.

no the gels at the doors of hospitals/banks and a lot of public place are not good they are more alcohol based than antiseptic.they do not reduce the spread of some viruses as it states that on the MSDS sheets bought with the products, If they did this hospital would not have another outbreak,
some of those gels can even burn the skin badly, how i know this it they burn my skin , i’ve tried several so i would be one of the people whom walk past these gels i carry wipes
. it really goes down to basic washing of hands.( properly washing hands). personal hygiene and the cleaning of the hospital

very true marin, this is the third outbreak in this hospital that i’m aware in three months, early jan, paddies day and now easter.
Its very alarming,300 cases in an 800 bed hospital, there should be an invistigation by infection control as no other hospital has so many outbreaks.

I watched the cleaners half heartedly washing the floor when I was In Hospital recently. The bathroom in the ward was filthy. Most of us were bed ridden with broken limbs so we were not making it dirty. and when I finally was able to walk I could not believe the state of the toilet. It hadn’t been cleaned properly. I was glad to get home. It’s no wonder the hospitals have these bugs all the time

when your a patient in hospital the days are long and can be very emotional, seeing a friendly face once a day is something to look forward to , also if your loved on was ill in hospital all you want to do is to see them and check if they doing ok.

The point everyone is missing is the outbreak is once again reported on a bank holiday weekend and its beaumont hospital. There are 300 cases all reported in one hospital that roughly has 8oo beds, that is more than one third of the patients who have this bug. When does this OUTBREAK become classified as an epidemic ? as it is only reported on bank holidays, what about the days and weeks between the BH…Something does not add up.Is the hospital deliberately keeping the general public in the dark as to the true extent of the problem as it has to be remembered that visitors are not been discouraged from visting loved ones on those days/weeks before a bank holiday…

there is always some kind of virus or bug going round , and it all comes down to good hygiene ! why get ppl dismissed from hospital when they carry MRSA ? they need to be isolated, the floor closed and cleaned, desinfected ! but no, let others take care of that, its ok when they spread it around, infect others, if have seen it,
treatend it and it’s mostly the elderly who go back to their home/nursinghome who carry it ! what about the other residents ?….there is a lot wrong with the place that you would expect to be hygienic, and clean, so called hospitals.
