Ice pops and mud baths: Keeping Dublin Zoo's residents cool in the heatwave

Lounging by the pool is an activity all mammals seem to enjoy.

TheJournal.ie / YouTube

WHAT ARE SOME of your favourite ways to cool down? A refreshing ice pop? Maybe a dip in the pool?

Or how about a frozen slab of horse meat?

These are just some of the methods the keepers at Dublin Zoo use to keep the residents there cool and content.

We popped in to meet Gerry Creighton, operations manager for animals and grounds, and see first-hand how the tigers, elephants, and orangutans stay cool.

I think if the animals are fit and healthy they should be in there own habitat instead of being locked up for committing no crime..I bet the Animals would love to splash around in a river and drink the water instead of some warder giving them water from a dirty hose.

@Kevin Dempsey: I think it might be dangerous to release them into the Phoenix Park though, tigers eating joggers, lions eating sunbathers, monkeys damaging cars etc.

@Kevin Dempsey: I’d rather be in Dublin and safe than in Kenya where I run the risk of being shot with a machine gun and having my tusks yanked out while still alive.

The zoo has changed dramatically over the last decade or so. As have most zoos around the world. Conservation, research and protection of animals is the aim now. Well done Dublin Zoo.
