Funeral to be held for 'much-loved' Limerick man who died after New York swim

Niall Gibbons went missing after the late-night swim on Long Island on Monday.

THE FUNERAL WILL take place this week of a Limerick man who died while swimming in New York last week.

Niall Gibbons had entered the waters off the coast of Long Island with two friends at 2am US time (7am Irish time) on Monday morning.

The two friends raised the alarm and an extensive search operation was conducted. The US Coast Guard then said it had made the “difficult decision” to suspend the search after a 29-hour long search.

Two passers-by then discovered a body on at Long Beach on Wednesday morning.

Local police told the Long Island Herald that they believed the body to be that of the Castletroy native and had contacted his family.

In a notice posted on RIP.ie, Niall is described as a “much-loved son” and a “cherished brother” who will be deeply mourned by his family and a large circle of friends.

A requiem mass is set to take place this Wednesday, before he is cremated at a later date.

When contacted by TheJournal.ie about the case, the Department of Foreign Affairs said it “cannot comment on individual consular cases”.

If 21,000 of the 79,000 coming in to Ireland are Irish what nationality are the 58,000?
I am sure those statistics don’t exist as they would be seen as racist.

Very likely the huge numbers of Italians, French and Spaniards moving to Dublin. Also Eastern Europeans. All legal migration and to be welcomed as many bring needed skills and money to invest. So whats your point?

Plenty of developments back up and running all over the country now. Ghosts estates no longer derelict, new housing projects popping up like no ones business.

If anything we shouldn’t be building so much for fear of ending up in trouble all over again but sure we’re Irish, we never learn!

the number of Syrian refugees will reach the enormous number of 350 this year. It’s those 100 or so households that are apparently the stick that broke the camels back – it was all going great until they arrived.

Let’s blame the lack of housing on them and the EU – and not on government inaction, poor planning, poor public transport, lack of decentralisation.

@Tony “Claims by Pakistani nationals have increased eightfold so far this year, while claims from Bangladeshis are up almost fourfold. People from the two nations now account for 54 per cent of all asylum claims being made in the Republic, compared with just 19 per cent of claims last year. According to the Department of Justice, applications from those nations are increasing much faster than from other countries because the Irish system is being used by young men on student visas in the UK to prolong their stays in Europe. A department review found that most of those from Pakistan and Bangladesh claiming asylum here had travelled from England toScotland and then taken a car ferry to Northern Ireland. They then travel to the Republic and lodge their asylum claims. Genuine claims The Irish Refugee Council said that while some of those claiming asylum from both countries were probably “chancing their arm”, others were genuine. Chief executive Sue Conlon said the council’s research found that many of the men were coming to Ireland after misinformation had spread within their own communities in the UK. “They seem to think by living in two EU states, rather than one, this increases their chances [of securing asylum], and of course that has no impact at all,” she said. Meanwhile, the Government has insisted the State agencies responsible for deportations are working to ensure as many as possible are carried out despite ongoing complications around detaining failed asylum seekers ahead of being deported. A High Court judgement, known as the “Omar judgement”, two years ago found that gardaí did not have the right to enter private dwellings to arrest those for whom deportation orders had been signed. ADVERTISEMENT It has emerged that both the number of deportations being effected and the number being signed by the Minister for Justice have fallen significantly. This is despite the number of claims for asylum increasing over the past two years following sharp declines for more than a decade. Falling numbers In 2012, for example, some 302 deportation were effected. In 2013, when the Omar judgement was handed down, that number had fallen to 209. And last year, the first full year that gardaí could not enter private dwellings to detain people for deportation, forced removals from the State plummeted by 45 per cent to 114 cases. The number of deportation orders being signed last year also fell, by 57 per cent to 739. However, while deportations and deportation orders declined sharply in 2014, the number of asylum claims increased by 53 per cent to 1,448 cases.”…. http://www.irishtimes.com/news/social-affairs/asylum-claims-in-ireland-up-while-deportations-fall-1.2422093

I wouldn’t advise anyone to move here. I have achieved what I have in spite of constant obstacles put in place by stupid rules and downright corrupt practice. Irish people were brain washed for so long to leave. the political class loved it because they never had to answer to anybody and actively encouraged emigration. David Mc williams is right we should stay and build Ireland and encourage all young people to stay and keep Ireland Irish and encourage the people who felt obliged to leave to come back. besides where do people go now for a better life, hardly American anymore ?

I came back last year after years abroad.

While I am happy to be back it is shocking how poor public services are in this country.
    Public transport is a joke.
    Housing is a joke.
The little strewn all over the streets is a disgrace. #
And this lunatic notion that Irish people possess that we are a friendly, welcoming nation is absolutely not borne out by the number of rough sleepers in central Dublin or the anti-social behaviour of some of our native Dublin skangers.

Still glad to be back but it feels weird to be in a country where all of the above is seen as acceptable.

Thank God you’re gone gomez! How much social welfare did you rip Ireland off for?Did you pay your rent up to date before you legged it? Hopefully more of you leeches leave our shores and we might get back to normal.
