Love Island

Almost half of all women aged 15-34 who watched TV on Wednesday watched Love Island

The reality TV show has captured people’s attention over the last five weeks.

THE REALITY TV show Love Island is making an impression on Irish viewers – particularly among young women.

If you haven’t watched an episode, it’s difficult to explain – here’s Wikipedia’s attempt, which is the best of the lot:

“Love Island involves a group of contestants, referred to as Islanders, living in isolation from the outside world in a villa in Mallorca, constantly under video surveillance.

“To survive in the villa the Islanders must be coupled up with another Islander, whether it be for love, friendship or money, as the overall winning couple receives £50,000.”

At the end of the show, the public’s preferred person of the winning couple must choose whether to share their winnings with their partner, or keep the money for themselves.

“On the first day, the Islanders couple up for the first time based on first impressions, but over the duration of the series they are forced to ‘re-couple’ where they can choose to remain in their current couple or swap and change.”

The show puts couples through a series of challenges to test their mettle, and in a select few episodes it asks the public to vote for their favourite couple.

There’s a one-hour episode every evening at 9pm apart from Saturdays. This is the fourth season, which will run for at least eight weeks; last year’s season was extended by a week due to the popularity of the show.

This week, TV3 released figures on the number of viewers the show has accumulated after five weeks in, which makes for interesting reading.

Love Island is delivering on average 136,000 viewers per episode and commanding a share of 11%. An average of 22% of the 15-44 cohort are watching this season, with an average of 31% of women aged 15-34 watching and 26% of women aged 25-44.

This week the viewing figures broke records for the show.

Monday and Tuesday’s episodes delivered over 200,000 viewers on average and achieved record shares for the show.

Tuesday’s episode was delayed by an hour due to the World Cup quarter final between England and Colombia going into extra time and then penalties.

On Wednesday night, over 45% of all women 15-34 who were watching TV watched Love Island -  a significant statistic considering the competition between many different TV stations.

There’s also been over 4.6 million streams across live 3player and catch-up services.

This data was collected by Nielsen Television Audience Measurement, who have been providing a televisions ratings measurement service in Ireland since 1996.

The figures above are based on surveys done on homes from 1,050 homes, or around 2,500 people.

Fair play to O’Leary, even through all the hardship going in the economy and the airline industry, he is still driving the company upwards.

Hardship in the economy and the airline industry… Sounds like someone has replaced your newspapers with copies from 2010. It’s golden time for the airline industry, they have never been doing better with some obvious exceptions.

All 5 of the american airlines carriers posted record breaking profits for the quarter…American $860mil (actually $1.5bn), Delta $801mil, United $789mil, Southwest $465mil, and Jetblue $260mil.

Ryanair customers generally have no idea of the workings of the industry, prices or market.

As a very frequent flyer, I queue up early because I want to get onto the plane as quickly as possible, store my bag, sit down and relax. I don’t want to be in a situation where I have to store my bag in an overhead locker at the other end of the plane because there is no space in my overhead locker.

Also, if my bag has to go down below into the luggage hold (because there isn’t room) I have to wait at baggage collection which adds an extra 15-20 minutes waiting (in airports like Dublin or London Stansted). I’ve been in a situation once where I missed my train in the UK because I had to wait at baggage collection.

I’m flying to Dublin in 2 weeks, the cheapest flight I could get was £94, aerlingus was only £120 from Heathrow. Last year I flew the same time for £42. Thats over 100% more. I booked the flight over 3 months ago. I check the prices all the time. Ryanair prices have gone up so much this year.

He’s probably looking for cheaper airport charges. They did the same with Manchester. Threatened to pull out of the airport if he didn’t get a better deal. The airport said nothing they could do. Ryanair pulled out but 6 months later they returned with even more routes. It’s an old trick they try to make more profits. Doesn’t work all the time. They will return to Sweden.

Prices are rising. That’s why profits are up. I wouldn’t go near them. Lufthansa in particular through Frankfurt can be very cheap and prices are all inclusive of bags, seats and a cup of tea.

And they don’t boast about customer service. They just do it.

When ANY business is exceeding their competitors profits time and time again I think it’s worth a closer look. Ryanair is not Google. They didn’t create a new beast. They fly people from A to B.

However, if you raise any eyebrows about anything ‘successful’ in Ireland you get shot down.

Perhaps if we has raised a few eyebrows about other success stories of the past we may not have ended up as a bankrupt nation.

The property bubble lasted how long? versus Ryanair. You know how long this company has been in existence. As long as they give their customers what they want at a price point the market will bare they will survive.

Hundreds of thousands of people pass through London Airports every day (http://www.heathrowairport.com/about-us/company-news-and-information/company-information/facts-and-figures).
