THE FIRST PARCEL delivered over water by drone has taken place, An Post said.

Yesterday, just after 3.30pm, a parcel was delivered by drone from Roonagh Pier in Mayo to Clare Island.

An Post said that it’s Ireland’s first ever autonomous parcel delivery from the mainland to an island using a drone.

The use of drones for leisure has been increasing, and has got businesses and other services testing their use in a number of ways.

Fire services have begun to use drones to capture footage to help them get a sense of how a fire is spreading, to help find people who may be trapped, and identify areas that could pose a danger to crews.

Earlier this year South Dublin County Council said it would begin using drones to tackle dumping in the Clondalkin area. The council told TheJournal.ie that it is progressing with its proposals and drones will be used in the county from early 2018.

The Police Service of Northern Ireland (PSNI) has successfully used drones to prevent the harassment and maltreatment of a native falcon, the peregrine. The birds were being poisoned, shot, trapped and having their eggs and chicks stolen from nests. Cameras fitted on drones that patrolled the area were used to monitor hotspots for this activity and there was a clear reduction in incidents.
