OVER A DOZEN puppies were seized by Galway County Council this week after being found to be malnourished and kept in a “horrendous condition”.
The local authority seized 16 puppies and had them assessed and treated by the county vet. Four died in the first two days after being rescued, and two other pups died in the following days.
The puppies were brought to Madra, a kennels in Camus, Connemara for neglected, abused and abandoned dogs. The organisation works closely with the council, which rents four kennels next to Madra as a pound for the area.
“The pups’ previous caretakers allowed them to get into horrendous condition,” Madra said. “Emaciated, riddled with fleas, lice and roundworm and ultimately, left in a trailer with no access to food or water.”
The organisation also said that parvovirus had been confirmed in one of the puppies. It’s a highly contagious illness which can attack white blood cells and cause lifelong heart problems, meaning all the animals are in danger.
The remaining 10 puppies, which were named after superheroes, are “still fighting for their lives,” it said.
Batman, Ivy, Clark, Bruce Banner, Grout, Logan, Jean Grey, Kara, Loki and Diana are still fighting for their lives.
These little mites have been pushed to their absolute limits and we hope they will find the strength to pull through.
The organisation warned people about buying dogs from illegitimate breeders and urged anyone with information of illegal trade between Ireland and the Uk to report it to the Gardaí.

The government will do absolutely nothing about this and nothing to amend our current completely inadequate legislation. We are getting a reputation across the globe as being backward and cruel in terms of how we treat animals.

Here we go again what kind of sick person would do this to beautiful little pups I sincerely hope they are severely death with, this cruelty has to stop, they need to get prison for a long stretch
@Sheila McNulty: “severely death with” probably an auto-correct error. Nevertheless, I agree with the sentiment.
And all were destined to be sold as “registered purebreeds” to clueless buyers. If people did a little research before jumping on donedeal to buy a puppy the money supporting this industry could be slashed.
@Rachael Nicholson: Anyone who buys a puppy is contributing to this. Puppies are then treated as commodities that are traded by people that have no concern as to their welfare.
@Sean: That’s a fair point. Unfortunately, we’ll never be able to eliminate the breeding and sale of dogs completely. And if people won’t rehome a rescue dog, we can at least encourage people to careful when buying pups.

Here we go again, ! Every month dogs are found. Little changes. A lot of dogs are being born & sold in uk but no one is every caught.
Breaks my heart to see poor little defenceless dogs treated like this.
Cmon, name and shame them. Why are the culprits always afforded the luxury of anonymity?
We need to pressure TDs to start seizing all animals that are not microchipped. Then large fines- take it direct from salary or dole. No matter what part of society you are from – ethnic minority or not.

Heart breaking to see the condition of those innocent creatures. Puppy Farming is a blot on our reputation as a nation. It’s unfortunately part of a wider animal welfare problem. Existing laws are not being enforced. Just consider at all the abandoned horses dying in ditches across Ireland, and horrific animal cruelty posing as “sport” is still permitted here. I hope the anti fur farming Bill proposed by the Solidarity party will be passed in the Dail after the summer recess, or that the government opts to ban this practice. Every year, 200,000 mink are confined in tiny cages at the three Irish farms and gassed to death when they are six months old. We need to sort out our attitudes to animals. They do no harm to us, and yet we make their lives so miserable
Why isn’t something being done about the live animal testing that goes on in this country!!!

Lock the owners up and throw away the keys. Huge fines. Name and Shame. Wishful thinking though. Nothing will be done. Nothing.

Those people I talk of that got the bad start in life,I wouldn’t be one bit upset if I heard something terrible happened them, the journal thinks that might be perceived as toxic.
